I have strong positive prejudice about Portland because I have a good friend
from Portland called Karta (he is Healy of Kettle Chips fame) and the book
BongWater by Michael Hornburg.

There is a lovely line in the book where a police car zooms past in one
direction and a few minutes later another one zooms past in the opposite
direction. The narrator has a stoned insight into this odd behaviour: The
cops are not chasing criminals at all, but rather driving around "lending
ambiance for the tourists".

Regards

Jonathan

[Jonathan] Are you in London, Michelle?

Bikram is huge here. My girlfriend goes to Bikram West in Kensal Green.
I have been down a few times, but I find it hellish. The smell of 1000
litres of sweat baked into the carpet and the heat, that unbearable heat....

[Michelle] It does seem rather excessive, but I expect to enjoy the benefits
of a sauna along with the yoga... if I can only make it through the class.
(*crossed fingers*)  No carpet in this studio, thank goodness, so hopefully
the stench will start at zero at the beginning of class, rather than
lingering from years of ick.

I'm in Portland, Oregon, which is technically not a very large city but the
people are quite forward-thinking.  Things catch on quickly here.
Especially anything the slightest bit woo-woo.

Due to my new job I have been given a new mental challenge, I'm not allowed to bite my nails, as this is an involuntary action it's bloody hard and I can never recall whether I have done it or not at the end of the day.

One way to prevent nail biting is to dip your nails into something that is awfully unpleasant to taste...i dont remember what was used, but that was the same technique used to stop thumb sucking in bigger children.

on a different note: week #1 is over! updates!

its ok if the first week was shaky. trod on slowly, but surely. every day is a challenge. sometimes, looking forward and planning can be a daunting task. its easy to get discouraged and give up. if you slipped one day, pick yourself up and go for the next day. remember to give yourself a break during the course of the week.

from my experience > if you dont feel like doing..say the entire 5miles/day...do what you can..maybe a mile..maybe 2...push yourself just a bit even though it doesnt match your original target. one mile of running/day is definitely not the same as five miles of running/day, but one mile/day is infinitely better than zero miles/day. *something* is better than nothing at all.

as for me, sunrises are easier than sunsets. somedays, i push myself more and somedays i dont get out at all. i havent been able to give up my sugar...it lurks in that ice cream or that cocoa drink....not to mention the amount of sugar that gets ingested while tasting dishes as i cook them. tomorrow! tomorrow!

Updates?  OK, I'm doing pretty well - I rested on Sunday but otherwise
I've done something strenuous every day at midday since last Tuesday.  I
believe I may have lost a pound... (woop de doo)  Much more improvement
to come as long as we stay focused and disciplined!

Mermaid, you sound like you're doing great.  This is an excellent
motivator.  Good idea and good job!!  Thanks!

You need four strategies to defeat this habit.

  • First mental. See any hypnotherapist. They can instill a block against nail biting. It works.
  • Second physical. If you can afford it after paying the hypnotherapist, treat yourself to a manicure. Having your nails looking and feeling nice will help you not to bite them, and the cost of having the manicure (especially if high enough) will help you avoid biting them. Ask the manicurist to cut them short. If you can't find a way to afford it, clip your nails really short yourself, and then file them  very, very smoothly. Carry a nailfile in your wallet.
  • Third an alarm system. Apply bitter aloes (aka Aloe Vera, Aloe barbadensis and Aloe vulgaris in slightly different formulations) to your nails three times a day at meal times. Bitter aloes contain aloectin B (an immune system stimulant) which is very soothing on the skin, but more importantly in this application, they contain anthraquinones - one of the most bitter substances we know. Because of that, if you do bite your nails after starting this regime, you will know about it immediately. If you find yourself tasting bitter aloes, take whatever safety actions seem suitable, then file your nails smooth again and as soon as you can arrrange it, return to the hypnotherapist for a second treatment. (This may be what Mermaid was thinking of).
  • Fourth displacement activity: I suggest either an exercise ball or a set of worry beads. When you have nothing to do with your hands, play with your new toy instead.

This may seem like a lot more complication than necessary, but when you have developed a habit from childhood, and the habit involves a number of pleasure reflex stimulators, they can be very difficult to break, and you need all the breaks you can give yourself.

Good luck

Here's my end of the week update---

I've lost three pounds since last Monday, and have successfully doubled my workout schedule!  I've been getting in six workouts a week - three lifting, 2 circuit classes and a run.

Changed my diet to all fruit before workout/Atkins after workout - seems to be working well.  Lots more energy!  The theory is to avoid digesting while lifting.  Today I got a 174# bicep cable curl, which is my best yet, so it's certainly not hurting anything.  On days that I don't work out, I don't eat the fruit - it's Atkins all day.

I also just recently bought a discus by mail order and am looking forward to seeing how far I can huck it after all these years - I only threw it for one season in high school...

How's everybody else doing?

hey michelle!!

good to see you doing so well! I cant say that I am keeping up with my schedule as I planned. I am changing it as I go along. I walk uphill 30 mts/ day with a lightly loaded pack. I am looking to increase pack weight within a week or two. My goal would be about 45 lbs. But thats not going to happen anytime soon. I think I did something bad to my ankles this time. I can see wiggly green veins and I swear, I can see them throbbing. Its almost a pleasant feeling until you actually SEE the damn thing. Then, it gets all creepy. Next Tuesday, I am meeting with an old friend who is also a trainer. I havent lost one single pound. Not that it wouldnt be a good thing, but I am ok with it.

Re Atkins, wont ever work for me...being vegetarian and all. I am a carb loading girl. I absolutely believe in sugar before a session because it burns faster than protein or fat and gives me an instant boost.

Isnt a discus like a heavy thingy that you throw around like shot put...I vaguely remember that from school....

hedgehog....chop!
Straight in half, her friends buried it and gave it a little gravestone,
then they sent her a picture of it as a hate message....ahhh fun

All HAIL SAT!!

I believe it's a mixture of vegemite, chicken poo and some liquid for applicability (water should work)

anyway I'm joining to boot camp a lil late

I'm sick of pimples which seeming come and go, and the only thing I can link it to is the fact that I normally shower in the morning rather than night.
So I'm going to start showering at night from yesterday, and also to make sure I eat at least lunch and dinner everyday, sometimes I skip lunch, and I'm not much of a breakfast person, but I'll try my best there too

wanted: updates!

i am not sure if its a direct result of the new workout routine..or if its because i wake up early everyday for yoga at sunrise....there is an increase in energy and a noticeable increase in appetite..but get this..i feel hungry often and at regular intervals..but i eat less..i feel 'full' and satiated even when i eat less..i cant explain how this works...given that i am ravenous most times! but it makes me feel better because i feel that i enjoy my food more these days...life has fallen into a smooth routine as i have to wake up at a particular hour..the discipline is good..i feel 'crisp' and some people tell me that i am pleasant company..if you can beleive that..as though i wasnt cloyingly sweet already!!....

i am happy so far...discipline was my goal....i think i am almost there...what comes along with it is very welcome and much appreciated..

relatedly or unrelatedly, i sleep lesser hours and have more vivid dreams....

how is everyone else doing?
