So what are some of your favorite movie scores? Not soundtracks as in bands featured. But the actual scores. Tho' feel free to mention soundtracks as well if you really love them. I've just been in a very instrumental mood lately.

And I ask because I'm terribly addicted to everything Clint Mansell does. Clint wrote the soundtrack for Requiem for a Dream and several other movies including Pi. Requiem however is by far the most beautiful, humbling soundtrack I have ever heard.
You can hear a piece of it here, on Kronos Quartet's Myspace...
The song: Summer Overture

Clint Mansell has some of his work in progress up on his own Myspace. The song The Last Man is from the next movie he is scoring entitled, The Fountain. I love this track, it tears my heart out from the first few bars...

Blade Runner is another wonderful score. And funny perhaps. I DJ'd at my friend's wedding last year, and I played the Emperor's March from Star Wars when they entered the banquet room. heh, Fun!

Ohhh Pi see? Clint Mansell again! I haven't heard most of those scores. Or, more accurately, I haven't heard them since the last that I watched the movies.

Fight Club with the Dust Brothers score is definitely a wicked one!

Also I forgot to mention, I'm biased because I adore Nick Cave, but his soundtrack for The Proposition which he wrote with the violinist Warren Ellis, has as many haunting moments as the film. It also won all sorts of "Best Musical Score" awards if you keep track of that kind of thing.
And Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" made its debut in the original The Exorcist which Oldfield wrote the score for. I remember reading how he added numerous things such as the buzzing of flies into the music mix, anything which would add unease and suspense. Heh, I still have Tubular Bells on cassette tape actually.

Danny Elfman wrote a haunting soundtrack for Basic Instinct, and Moby wrote a beautiful soundtrack for Heat.
Actually I'm a little surprised that Danny Elfman hadn't come up earlier than this.
Heat has Einsteurzende Neubauten on it! <3<3<3

Clint Mansell's musical score for The Fountain (which I've seen 3 times in the theatre and love), has been nominated for both a Golden Globe. & also a Broadcast Critics awards. Plus it has also won best original score - Online Film Critics, and Best Original Score - Chicago film critics.

That rocks! It's a beautiful score well worth buying if distorted strings and absolutely haunting atmosphere sounds appealing.

I had to go out and buy the score CD for Ravenous.  It was created by Michael Nyman (The Piano, Prospero's Books, Gattaca) and Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) and it is one of the creepiest things I have ever heard.  An artful blend of the playful and the sinister, where Civil War-period pieces segue into ominous orchestral scores.  But if for no other reason, it's worth owning for the final track, a terrifyingly dark and hypnotic piece built upon a water-rotted loop of three minor piano chords.
