It is like measuring aggression by the number of punches a man throws, then
denouncing a man who is attacked by 5 people as "aggressive" because he
throws more punches (on average) than his foes.

Actually the man is throwing four times as many punches as all of his foes *combined*. You don't have to take sides to call that agressive.

Meridion is not really much use in this case. A consensus has
built up about Joe, some of it justified, some of it manipulated (he has
definitely been baited at times).

It has been mentioned more than once previously that it is a mistake to blame Joe's low reputation on his politics or contrarian position. You, Jonathan, are the obvious counterexample, sharing Joe's position largely, but with a healthy reputation. If you were correct in your assertion, you should have a low reputation too.

Hey folks,

I had to be away for a while due to pressing realities of life, and now I notice that the already beaten to death issue of Joe Dees came up once more.

What did I see? Blunderov opened a thread about how the FBI took action against Indymedia, an alternative news network, and confiscated their hard disks offering a rather vague explanation.

What would I expect from an "open" rational forum, as a subscriber? Someone of a different opinion might well try to contest the facts, offer a justification for the facts, or even paste an article and a couple of links to that effect.

What actually happened? Joe Dees pasted a flood of 6 (six) unrelated articles as to how Kerry uses thugs to attack Bush. You didn't receive these 6 articles in your mailboxes because (a) you have given Joe Dees a very low average rating and (b) you have voted that posts from people with a very low rating will not be distributed. You can change that of course -- the votes are still open -- but I believe that these 6 irrelevant posts justify your vote (it is about the "value" you want to get from your participation here, after all.)

The flood posts were strictly irrelevant but memetically interesting, for two reasons:

(a) It seems that JD was more interesting in scoring general points for Bush and against Kerry -- his little obsession -- than engaging in a rational discussion on the attack on that alternative news network. This is not an issue of throttling a contrarian voice in our forum -- this is an issue of throttling lazy irrelevance and faith-based crusades.

(b) If there is any relevance at all, it is this pattern: "Kerry's thugs attack Bush, so it is time for Bush to bring down that news network." Does the pattern sound familiar?

In any case, our value-based rating system did pass the test once more.
