19:00:05 | Lucifer | It isn't supposed to recommend revenge, but rather limits the extent of the revenge |
19:00:27 | Lucifer | extent of acceptable revenge, to avoid escalation |
19:00:38 | WW-PDA | where are my keys? |
19:00:38 | localroger | I've seen that idea Lucifer, but you have to admit that in limiting the extent of revenge it is certainly endorsing the idea of revenge. |
19:00:41 | Lucifer | in other words: only one eye for an eye |
19:01:08 | Lucifer | Lucifer has changed the topic on #virus to "Crime and punishment" |
19:01:21 | Lucifer | yes, it endorses it or at least accepts the idea |
19:01:28 | WW-PDA | Why am I here? |
19:01:31 | Lucifer | oh oh |
19:01:51 | localroger | * localroger suspects he is not getting some joke or other |
19:02:01 | WW-PDA | WW-PDA (~pocketirc@[death to spam].ip70-185-193-73.ok.ok.cox.net) has quit IRC [Quit: Pocket IRC 1.1 (http://pocketirc.com/) UNREGISTERED] |
19:02:11 | Lucifer | everytime WW-PDA shows up he goes through the same sequence |
19:02:14 | Lucifer | must be automated |
19:02:21 | Lucifer | Sat usually kicks him if he is around |
19:02:29 | localroger | Hmmmm |
19:03:35 | Lucifer | So if someone harms someone else should there not be consequences? |
19:04:16 | localroger | Saying there shouldn't be "revenge" isn't the same as saying there shouldn't be "consequences." For me the consequence of losing my home in a civil suit is more compelling than the threat of, say, five years in prison. |
19:04:17 | Lucifer | I haven't studied law at all but sometimes I wish I had more background |
19:04:44 | Lucifer | Aren't both punishments revenge? |
19:05:01 | Lucifer | Or do you have a narrower definition? |
19:05:45 | localroger | Not really. The purpose of punishment in modern society is supposed to be to discourage criminal behavior. Discouraging negligence and discouraging premeditated murder require entirely different feedback mechanisms. |
19:06:07 | Lucifer | How do you know? |
19:06:31 | Lucifer | I would think the threat of dire consequences would work in both cases |
19:06:35 | localroger | Well, for one thing I regard it as possible that I might make a mistake, but I do not anticipate that I would ever need to be discouraged from committing deliberate murder. |
19:08:07 | Lucifer | Is anyone discouraged from premeditated murder by threat of punishment? |
19:08:13 | localroger | I think we have a pretty shizophrenic view of the whole thing as a society. |
19:08:28 | localroger | Oh, I'd say a lot of people are. But the ones that aren't cause all the trouble, don't they? |
19:08:39 | Lucifer | 2nd degree murder would be harder to discourage I would guess |
