Clinton: US Won’t Hesitate to Use Military Against Iran
Not a Threat, It's a Promise, Secretary of State Tells CFR

Dated: 2009-07-15

In a high-profile policy address before the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declared that the US wouldn’t not hesitate to use its military to “defend our friends, our interests, and above all, our people” during the segment discussing Iran. [ Hermit : "Defend" newspeak for "attack" ]

She elaborated on the declaration with “this is not an option we seek nor is it a threat; it is a promise.” Clinton also warned Iran that the US offer to hold talks, which she had previously said she didn’t expect to work to begin with, would not be open-ended and that “our willingness to talk is not a sign of weakness.” [ Hermit : Calling a threat a promise does not prevent it from being a threat. ]

Today’s comments are the latest in a long line of bellicose rhetoric coming from the Secretary of State. Last month during a television interview she said that Iran was risking the possibility of a US invasion, citing the disastrous 2003 invasion of Iraq as a model. [ Hermit : Also a threat, no matter how Clintonianly stunningly stupid. The Bush wars against inconsequential countries on palpably perverted pretexts destroyed the reputation and economy of the United States, reduced world oil supplies and severely damaged the global economy. What would an attack on a peaceful industrialized country four times larger and infinitely more capable, far more defensible and a major oil supplier achieve? ]

The US has been demanding [ Hermit : Totally illegally according to the Non-Proliferation Treaty which guarantees members the right to use nuclear power peacefully and requires nuclear nations to assist such use. ] that the Iranian government abandon its civilian nuclear energy generation program, and several officials have claimed, despite a stark lack of evidence, that Iran is working on nuclear weapons. The IAEA has pointed out no evidence for the accusation exists, and America’s own National Intelligence Estimate says they don’t believe Iran has an active weapons program either.

Israeli navy in Suez Canal prepares for potential attack on Iran

Dated: 2009-07-16

Two Israeli missile class warships have sailed through the Suez Canal ten days after a submarine capable of launching a nuclear missile strike, in preparation for a possible attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The deployment into the Red Sea, confirmed by Israeli officials, was a clear signal that Israel was able to put its strike force within range of Iran at short notice. It came before long-range exercises by the Israeli air force in America later this month and the test of a missile defence shield at a US missile range in the Pacific Ocean.

Israel has strengthened ties with Arab nations who also fear a nuclear-armed Iran. In particular, relations with Egypt have grown increasingly strong this year over the “shared mutual distrust of Iran”, according to one Israeli diplomat. Israeli naval vessels would likely pass through the Suez Canal for an Iranian strike.

“This is preparation that should be taken seriously. Israel is investing time in preparing itself for the complexity of an attack on Iran. These manoeuvres are a message to Iran that Israel will follow up on its threats,” an Israeli defence official said.

It is believed that Israel’s missile-equipped submarines, and its fleet of advanced aircraft, could be used to strike at in excess of a dozen nuclear-related targets more than 800 miles from Israel.

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Egyptian Foreign Minister, said that his Government explicitly allowed passage of Israeli vessels, and an Israeli admiral said that the drills were “run regularly with the full co-operation of the Egyptians.”

Two Israeli Saar class missile boats and a Dolphin class submarine have passed through Suez. Israel has six Dolphin-class submarines, three of which are widely believed to carry nuclear missiles.

Israel will also soon test an Arrow interceptor missile on a US missile range in the Pacific Ocean. The system is designed to defend Israel from ballistic missile attacks by Iran and Syria. Lieutenant-General Patrick O’Reilly, the director of the Pentagon’s Missile Defence Agency, said that Israel would test against a target with a range of more than 630 miles (1,000km) — too long for previous Arrow test sites in the eastern Mediterranean.

The Israeli air force, meanwhile, will send F16C fighter jets to participate in exercises at Nellis Air Force base in Nevada this month. Israeli C130 Hercules transport aircraft will also compete in the Rodeo 2009 competition at McChord Air Force base in Washington.

“It is not by chance that Israel is drilling long-range manoeuvres in a public way. This is not a secret operation. This is something that has been published and which will showcase Israel’s abilities,” said an Israeli defence official.

He added that in the past, Israel had run a number of covert long-range drills. A year ago, Israeli jets flew over Greece in one such drill, while in May, reports surfaced that Israeli air force aircraft were staging exercises over Gibraltar. An Israeli attack on a weapons convoy in Sudan bound for militants in the Gaza Strip earlier this year was also seen as a rehearsal for hitting moving convoys. [ Hermit : Another breach of the Grand Charter of the UN. ]

The exercises come at a time when Western diplomats are offering support for an Israeli strike on Iran in return for Israeli concessions on the formation of a Palestinian state.

If agreed it would make an Israeli strike on Iran realistic “within the year” said one British official.

Diplomats said that Israel had offered concessions on settlement policy, Palestinian land claims and issues with neighboring Arab states, to facilitate a possible strike on Iran.

“Israel has chosen to place the Iranian threat over its settlements,” said a senior European diplomat.

West Offering to Endorse Israeli Attack on Iran as Part of Settlement Deal

[ Hermit : As this story unfolds, one needs to try to think like an Iranian. Given the US and UK's subversion of the UN to facilitate Israel's illegal threats, and potentially actions, it would be in Iran's interests to have a nuclear concentration facility, whether centrifuge or, as I suspect, laser based, in a secure unannounced location, leaving the existing centrifuge cascades as a potential sacrificial target. So long as no nuclear material is introduced to the new location, it would not need to be declared to the IETF until near the time that a controlled material is introduced to them; should this happen while Iran is, unlike Israel, a member of the NPT. The fact that Iran's cascade expansion has happened more slowly than predicted might suggest that this has perhaps been accomplished. Should Iran be bombed, and this story makes it seem extremely probable that this may once more be in the works, their withdrawal, like the DPRK, from the NPT and immediate development of nuclear weapons would be an almost foregone - and perfectly justifiable - conclusion - as would a massive rise in perfectly justifiable anti-western sentiment and possibly activities. And of course, while the US maintains armies of hostages in the Middle East, which it will until at least 2010, retribution is not far from hand. Additionally, if somebody messes up in this lethal diplomatic brinkmanship, the consequences for the already tottering global economy will be nothing short of catastrophic. And for what? Persuading Israel to cease its illegal occupation of Palestine and ongoing ethnic cleansing of the areas it desires and adhere to the multitude of UN resolutions, including Security Council Resolutions, demanding that it withdraw to the 1967 borders before it implodes under the weight of its own iniquities? The Palestinians having been sacrificed to Israel for the genocide of WW II, the UN and Iran must now be sacrificed for the Palestinians? Who still will not have a state of their own, Jerusalem as a capital or the right to return to their homes in Israel as is also mandated by US sponsored resolutions dating back some 60 years. And the Democrats imagine that this will solve something? If this is the case, this is cognitive dissonance and insanity even more spectacular than that demonstrated by GW Bush. ]

Israel Would Recognize Palestinian Land Claims

Dated: 2009-07-16

The Times of London is citing unnamed Western diplomats as saying that the deal between Israel and the West on the issue of Palestinian statehood is taking shape, and that Western officials are offering to back an Israeli attack on Iran in return for certain concessions, including the recognition of some of the Palestinians’ land claims.

Israeli forces have been moving into position to launch such an attack recently, and with the West publicly coming out in favor of a diplomatic rapprochement with Iran it seems incredible to learn that behind the scenes they are offering not only to turn a blind eye to a unilateral Israeli attack on Iran, but to openly endorse it.

Israel has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran, claiming the nation is covertly developing nuclear weapons. Iran denies the charge, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) concedes that there is no evidence that Iran is actually seeking nuclear weapons.

The potential attack on Iran’s civilian nuclear program could create a dramatic anti-US backlash, according to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. He cautioned that this would be the case whether or not the US was responsible for the attack.
