Clinton Threatens to Attack Iran ‘The Way That We Did’ Iraq

Secretary of State Says US or "Some Other Enemy" May Launch First Strike Against Iran

[ Hermit : At least Bush did not have a recent example of American forces being trounced and the US economy eviscerated by unaffordable, ill advised, illegal idiotic wars perpetrated by Democratic and Republican misleadership. ]

Citing the disastrous 2003 US invasion of Iraq as an example, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today warned that by continuing to refuse to abandon its civilian nuclear program, Iran was risking the possibility of an invasion by the US or “some other enemy that would do that to them.”

The comments came during an interview on ABC’s "This Week" program, and when asked by interviewer and former Clinton-era official George Stephanopoulus, Secretary Clinton reiterated "that’s right, as a first strike."

The bulk of the interview emphasized US opposition to the Iranian program, along with unquestioned claims that the nation was pursuing nuclear weapons. Secretary Clinton also extended the American nuclear umbrella over Israel in the event that Iran attacked them. [ It would be interesting and very reminiscent of WW II should Russia extend a similar courtesy to Iran. ]

Considering it was no more than 72 hours ago that President Obama made his historic call for a "new beginning" to US relations with the Muslim world, it seems incredible that his administration is already raising the prospect of an Iraq-style invasion of Iran.

Already six years in, the Iraq occupation has killed thousands of US soldiers, sucked trillions from the American economy, and is stretching the military to its limits. It is unfathomable that with this war still far from over, the Obama Administration is considering an Iraq redux in its larger neighbor to the east.

Clinton: ‘Time Running Out for Iran’

Warns of 'Profound Consequences' if Iran Can't Prove Intentions Are Peaceful

[ Hermit : Even with the recent example of the Bush maladaministration, the total logical failure of:
    All Americans            [  ]
    Most Americans        [  ]
    American Politicians  [  ]
and resulting inability to recognize that requiring that a potential opponent prove a negative to avoid war is a guaranteed path to war, strikes again. The fact that Obama appointed this stupid, avaricious, Likudnik to an office as significant as that of Secretary of State is a sad indictment of his ability to evaluate capability. ]

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today warned of ‘profound consequences’ if Iran is unable to convince the United States that their civilian nuclear program “is intended exclusively for peaceful purposes.” [ Hermit : As we see below, the IAEA announced, again, that there is NO credible evidence of anything else, and the US intelligence services have just reported the same, but apparently none of that is sufficient from deterring the stupid, gullible and easily pressured, into all of which categories Hilary Clinton appears at home, from issuing threats in breach of treaty, obligation and fairness. Meanwhile the US not only abstains from calls that the region should be a nuclear weapon free zone but continues to attempt to protect Israel, the one non-NPT, nuclear armed state in the region, despite its history of attacking neighbours, abusing non-Jews under its control, engaging in war-crimes, threatening other nations in breach of International law, spying on the US and even selling US nuclear and military secrets to potential opponents.  ]

Iran has agreed to enter into talks with the six parties (the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany) which are planned for early next month. The US has said it doesn’t expect anything positive to come of the talks, and has been pressing the other five negotiating nations to support “crippling” sanctions against Iran.

Though Secretary Clinton insisted that Iran isn’t living up to its obligations, the IAEA yesterday reiterated that there was no proof that Iran was doing anything untoward in its civilian program, and Russia has said it firmly opposes any new sanctions.

The IAEA has continued to confirm that Iran isn’t diverting any of its low-enriched uranium to any military purpose, and the US intelligence community says it has confidence Iran doesn’t have an active nuclear weapons program. It remains unclear how Iran can possibly “prove” what the administration doesn’t want to believe, particularly when it is something international inspectors and US spies already know.

Clinton: Nothing Iran Can Do to Convince US Nuclear Program Is Peaceful

Officials Still Trying to Figure Out How to Make Sanctions Worse

[ Hermit : I never thought that somebody could make Bush look like a rocket scientist, but Bilary is definitely giving it a try. Never forget that the only effective sanctions are those which starve the poor until the rich surrender - or failing that, those that weaken a country enough to allow an invasion a decade later. ]

In the latest indication yet that the US is entering this week’s Iran talks very grudgingly, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton publicly announced today that she doesn’t believe there is any piece of evidence the Iranian government could possibly present which would convince US officials that their civilian nuclear program is “only for peaceful purposes.” [ Hermit : Belief is like that. ]

Clinton, who has repeatedly said she doesn’t expect diplomacy to work with Iran, then suggested that the Iranian government could try to “open their entire system” to an extensive investigation, though her focus at this point appears to be finding ways to make the sanctions against Iran more crippling.

The positions in the Obama Administration seemed to be best illustrated by comments made today by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, who said it was his “personal opinion that the Iranians have the intention of having nuclear weapons,” while conceding that whether or not they’re actually doing that is “in doubt.”

Which is putting it mildly. Despite the endless list of officials in the Bush and Obama Administrations who have presented Iran’s nuclear weapons program as something known with absolute certainty, top members of the US intelligence community have said as recently as last week that they in fact believe with high confidence that Iran doesn’t have an active nuclear weapons program.

And if administration officials won’t believe their own intelligence reports, or the repeated certifications from the IAEA, it is perhaps not surprising that they won’t believe the Iranian government.
Still, it must inevitably beget the question: what incentive does Iran have for providing all this access above and beyond its requirements under the NPT if it won’t be believed anyhow?
