Iran's state radio says an Iranian warship has arrived in the Gulf of Aden to protect Iranian vessels against Somali pirates. Iran said last month it was negotiating with pirates who had a seized a ship but warned it was ready to use force to free the vessel. The Hong-Kong registered Delight, carrying a crew of 25 and 36,000 tons of wheat, was headed for the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas when it was hijacked near Yemen.
China has confirmed it is also sending three warships to Somalia as part of international efforts to fight piracy. It is the first time Communist China has deployed its navy outside Chinese waters. Somali pirates have already seized more than 100 ships this year alone.
