Christmas gift Cards hit by recession?

A friend of mine posted this in his blog. He didn't include any links, and I didn't ask where he got his info. I think it's interesting though. Only some of these stores are in Canada or outside the States period.

Anyways stores close all the time so has this store-closing meme began due to recession fears, or is this an honest worry?

-------------

It seems there are lots of stores that are closing due to the "recession" and the fact that people are not shopping. If you have any "gift cards" from these stores, make sure you use them, or you will lose them.

Watch those store money cards and gift cards and credit slips! Stores that informed the Security Exchange of closing plans between October 2008 and January 2009.

Circuit City stores... most recent (? how many)

Ann Taylor- 117 stores nationwide are to be shuttered

Lane Bryant,, Fashion Bug ,and Catherine's to close 150 store nationwide

Eddie Bauer to close stores 27 stores and more after January

Cache will close all stores

Talbots closing down all stores

J. Jill closing all stores

GAP closing 85 stores

Footlocker closing 140 stores more to close after January

Wickes Furniture closing down

Levitz closing down remaining stores

Bombay closing remaining stores

Zales closing down 82 stores and 105 after January.

Whitehall closing all stores

Piercing Pagoda closing all stores

Disney closing 98 stores and will close more after January.

Home Depot closing 15 stores 1 in NJ (New Brunswick)

Macys to close 9 stores after January

Linens and Things closing all stores

Movie Galley Closing all stores

Pacific Sunware closing stores

Pep Boys Closing 33 stores

Sprint/ Nextel closing 133 stores

JC Penney closing a number of stores after January

Ethan Allen closing down 12 stores.

Wilson Leather closing down all stores

Sharper Image closing down all stores

K B Toys closing 356 stores

Lowes to close down some stores

Dillard's to close some stores.

I'm with Percy (the cat) regarding the recession.

:::Mo scritches Percy's and DJ_dAndroid's heads:::

I pretty much haven't done Christmas for several years now, so now I'm just gonna be trendy. I've never understood how a bunch of consumer activity is supposed to make us good people. Just call my regular donut a "Christmas donut" and I'm good to go. If you just want a party that's fine, but don't invite me unless there is alcohol and MJ, and no squealing kids. Well behaved pets are fine. Otherwise, Bahumbug!

Hmmmmm, I didn't see WalMart on the store closing list. Seriously, if you can't find it at WalMart, there's probably a decent chance that you don't really need it. I wouldn't be surprised to see a tsunami-recession wiping out more chains than this list.

*puuurrrr*

I'm not a fan of Xmas either. The religious aspect is moot. And as a secular family get-together time it's just too stressful. I've actually worked the night of in the last few years.

As for the closures, a friend of mine pointed out that stores closing probably isn't odd, be it non-performers being shut-down or moved, or money freed up, whatever, but entire chains closing is considerably more rare.

turns out that at least some of the names in that list arent closing..

http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/business/The-Economy-May-Steal-Your-Gift-Card-.html

having said that, there is no doubt that the economy is creaking and many more stores will close...

(...)
We have been hearing about an email that's going around about store closings. The email gives a list of stores that are all supposedly closing...and says if you have any gift cards to a store on the list, to use them immediately or they will be worthless.

We wanted to find out how much of the email is true, so we did some research to get the facts.

The email says the following stores will be closing:

    * Cache
    * Zales
    * Piercing Pagoda
    * Macy’s
    * Pep Boys
    * JC Penney
    * Ethan Allen

However, we confirmed with each store individually, the information in the email is false and none of the stores are closing.

Now, if you have a gift card to a store that's filed for bankruptcy, unfortunately you don't have much recourse.

Under federal law, if a business files chapter 11 bankruptcy, they do have the right to stop honoring gift cards. If the store wants to continue accepting gift cards, it's up to the retailer to ask a bankruptcy court to allow it. If the court denies it, there's not much you can do.

The courts did approve stores like Circuit City, Sharper Image and Linens 'N Things, who have all filed for bankruptcy, to continue honoring gift cards! So that's a good sign.

Deep Discounts Draw Shoppers, but Not Profits
By STEPHANIE ROSENBLOOM
Published: November 30, 2008

full article:http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/01/business/01shop.html?_r=2&hp=&adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1228143693-eJfdkPjzibplkCELlOWNPw

excerpt:

Quote:
Sales in the nation’s stores were strong over the weekend, to the relief of retailers that had been expecting a holiday shopping period as slow as the overall economy.

But while spending was up, there were troubling signs in the early numbers. The bargains that drove shoppers to stores were so stunning, analysts said that retailers — already suffering from double-digit sales declines the last two months — would probably see their profits erode even further.

Also, after shoppers flooded stores on Friday, foot traffic trailed off significantly on Saturday and Sunday.
