He has a point, but I cannot stand these sorts of single issue loons.

There is something odious about this man's campaign.

If he were persecuting it against Buddhists or Muslims I suspect he would be
vitiated by the readers of the Huffington Post.

Happy New Year by the way.

Kind regards

Jonathan

I agree with Jonathan Davis's assessment here.  It would be one thing as simply an intellectual exercise, but as a legal proceding I think it is entirely frivolous and counterproductive toward actually persuading anyone.  Its not as if Righi were trying to teach Intelligent Design in public schools or anything like this.  It sounds like he was confining his religious delusions to the church community where it belongs.  I have a hard time understanding how anyone in this situation suffered real harm here enough to provide standing to sue.  "Abusing popular credulity" doesn't sound like a worthwhile cause of action to me.  Abusing the legal system sounds like a better theory for the Italian courts to consider.

" . . . continued . . . Signor Cascioli, author of a book called The Fable of Christ, began legal proceedings against Father Righi three years ago after the priest denounced Signor Cascioli in the parish newsletter for questioning Christ’s historical existence.

Yesterday Gaetano Mautone, a judge in Viterbo, set a preliminary hearing for the end of this month and ordered Father Righi to appear. The judge had earlier refused to take up the case, but was overruled last month by the Court of Appeal, which agreed that Signor Cascioli had a reasonable case for his accusation that Father Righi was “abusing popular credulity”. "

Happy New Year, Jonathan!

[Blunerov] Anyone who has ever been roasted from the pulpit will know how infuriating it is. In this maneuver, a deemedly irretrievable sinner is publically castigated for the edification of the wider congregation. The strategy is calculated to deprive the target of any meaningful reply. The wretched sinner finds himself in the same position as one who has been asked an improper question; no response is possible that does not fall in with the tormentors agenda. Silence is taken for assent and protest as proof of devilry.

The spirit of the inquisition is by no means dead. Take no prisoners is my view.

Happy new year to one and all.

Best Regards.
