If the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearing was a "hi-tech" lynching,
then the John Roberts hearings are somewhere between a "hi-tech"
praise-a-thon and a "lo-tech" lube job.

the eel grabbing contest on all the news channels today has been
interesting, even if in a non-informative way

50:50 chance he has everyone fooled, and will be a far right-wing Trojan
horse

He (Roberts) answers every question about every settled court case with
"it is entitled to respect under principles of stare decisis," the
concept that long-established rulings should be given extra weight.

Arlin Specter to Joseph Biden upon Biden's complaint that Robert's
answers were misleading: "Stop interrupting his answers. They may be
misleading, but they're his answers."

Ya gotta love it.

[Blunderov] Nice to hear from WW and in top form too.

It strikes me that law is inherently conservative and society is inherently
dynamic. Perhaps this 'lag' is why the law is so often 'an ass'.

Still, law is a very marvelous and useful invention when you consider the
alternative. Can't live with it, can't live without it.

Best Regards.

If indeed we our a dynamic society with conservative law because of "lag."  I say it's time to do some sort of updating and upgrading.

[Blunderov] Cannabis laws spring to mind. They cause a ridiculous amount of
harm in return for absolutely no demonstrable benefit that I can see.

It must be fear of SOMETHING, but I don't know for the life of me what it
might be. It's not as if stoking up a doob is a heinous biblical sin as far
as I know.

See http://www.alternet.org/drugreporter/24690/

"The thing is that the marijuana war doesn't seem to be doing a thing for
keeping kids from smoking pot. In their Efficacy and Impact report, the JPI
cites the Monitoring the Future Survey, an annual survey of 50,000 students
from grades 8, 10 and 12. The recent survey actually found a 90 percent
increase in the number of 8th graders who had tried pot, a 66 percent
increase for 10th graders, and a 44 percent increase for seniors in high
school. Thirteen years of increased marijuana arrests actually correspond to
increased pot smoking by kids.

In other words, thousands of pot arrests and scare tactic messaging isn't
doing anything to keep these kids from trying marijuana. It can be argued,
on the contrary, that this drug war strategy is having an entirely
detrimental effect."

Best Regards
