...i have recently suffered a massive adware/spyware infestation on my
computer by merely visiting a bad website.  it is vast and
multi-tiered...and it has been my hobby to try to rid my system of it.  i
will admit that i have not been too successful just yet.  maybe a trojan is
also involved?  i havent been so infected for years ...it is quite shocking
and humiliating.

...can anyone reccommend some good freeware out there that might work best?

...has anyone else encountered recent surges like this one?  my g/f's
computer has also suffered.  all this in just the last 3 days!

I always thought it was a bloody stupid time to have it anyway.

I'm fond of 'ad-aware'

It makes a cool 'bewong' sound at the end.

Three of them:
"ad-aware" from http://www.lavasoft.com
"spybot search and destroy" from http://www.safer-networking.org
"a squared" from http://www.emsisoft.com  (for trojans and dialers)

Install *all 3*. None of them alone catches everything, and they always
catch something no matter how careful you are.

Update and run all three every one or two weeks. They may take 5-15
minutes each. Spybot has also an "immunize" option which runs in the
background and catches some shit (ad-aware has one too, but only if you
pay or... nm).

I assume that you have some firewall program such as ZoneAlarm. Without
a firewall it is a matter of time to be infected. Also an antivirus
program. A very good free one for those who won't touch Norton/Symantec
with an eleven foot pole is AVG from http://free.grisoft.com

...thankyou very much:)  i actually just managed a full clean by using a
combination of spy-bot search and destroy, AntiVir Guard (Luke Filewalker),
and WinPatrol (the security scotty dog).  the AntiVir Guard was a very
impressive and complete package.  i was impressed.

....that scotty dog program i used has been extremely useful in interpreting
the various programs running on my system, as well as notifying me when any
new programs are attempting to insert themselves, redirect me, or run
themselves on startup....it's not enough to clean your system...you have to
prevent further infection lest the trojans reinstall the spyware/adware
while eliminating them, which in turn also manage to reinstall the trojans
youve cleaned ad infinitum.

i have cleaned up my entire system in about 2 hours.  try
www.freewarehome.com and look in the security file section.  it's a very
solid website....with honest reccommendations.

though i am NO computer jedi...so keep that in mind.

Yes! I also am suffering. I contracted something while I was on vacation.
I’ve used countless programs. Rid my system of all but the very necessary
files, and still no luck. I have to run three spyware removers & a registry
cleaner daily just to keep the system from being overloaded.

This has been going on for around 3 weeks.

The only think I haven’t tried yet is to send the log file of "Hijackthis"
to a "geek" forum, to see what they have to say. I am a hard quitter, and
don’t want to think that I can’t solve this problem on my own. In a few days
I may break down though.

Cut off the problem at its source by switching from Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox. http://www.getfirefox.com/

Besides the excellent recommendation to switch from IE to Firefox, I would recommend using ‘HiJackThis’ and posting the log to http://forums.techguy.org/

This is the only way I was able to get my system back from the brink of strangulation!

Weird... My Ad-aware definitions are dated 2005-05-17 and SpybotS&D's
are dated 2005-05-13. Free versions both.
