Tulsa Parents Express Concern Over Teacher Workshop On Islam
Several Tulsa citizens are speaking up about a teacher workshop on the
Muslim world. The workshop is called "The Arab world and Islam".
Organizers say the goal is to give teachers information on the Muslim
culture. But opponents of the class don't want any part of it.
News on 6 Reporter Omar Villafranca looks at both sides.
Opponents of the workshop met at a church Tuesday night. They voiced
their opposition to what they're calling the indoctrination of their
children. A pastor, who's also a former Muslim, spoke to the group. He
says he wants the class stopped before it even starts.
Workshop organizers say the class explains the concepts of Islam, and
then discusses Arab issues, like politics, natural resources and culture.
Some people at the meeting don't want any of it taught to their kids.
“They've made a big issue about making sure that Christianity and God is
not talked about in school so I think it's only right that we stand up
and defend our children against being taught things from another religion."
"I believe in Jesus Christ and I prefer him over the Islamic faith so
that's why I'm here I want to make sure my voice counts in that."
Educators say the class is designed to inform teachers and to let them
use the information when the lesson calls for it. Tulsa School Board
member Matt Livingood: “We are not implementing any curriculum for Arab
studies or the study of Islam. What was provided at the particular
workshop was a set of resources that teacher may or may not incorporate
into their regular classroom instruction."
Schools in 42 states have allowed the workshop and according to Oklahoma
education standards, one of the goals of teaching history is
understanding the world's major religions.
School officials say parents with concerns should talk to their child's
teachers and principal about the lesson.

...In all fairness, one issue regarding islam that has always irked me is
that it is common practise for islamic countries to strictly forbid
prostheletizing foreign religions under the penalty of death....
meanwhile....
...islamic 'missionaries' never hesitate to take advantage of other nations'
tolerance of preaching whatever you may wish.
...i say, if you want to preach here...allow others to preach in islamic
states. otherwise it becomes an ugly hipocracy.

These yahoos actually think that if their children learn about Arab =
culture and religion, they=92ll convert to Islam? They must not have =
much faith in the veracity of Christianity if they think their kids will =
be swayed so easily by a false religion. Silly Christians=97it=92s a =
good thing we don=92t have people like that here in Iowa. ; )
P.S. How come my posts are coming out all funky when I use Outlook =
Express? The whole reason I started getting the CoV mailing list =
through my Hotmail account was so I could use OE, so that I=92d have =
more control over my posts=97because when I tried posting through my =
Yahoo! e-mail account, the e-mail looked fine before I sent it, but =
things somehow got tweaked in transit or something. Outlook Express =
done did me wrong.

[Blunderov] There is, of course, a very great difference between being
taught things FROM a religion and being taught things ABOUT a religion.
Or so it seems to me. If it is the case that the faithful are convinced
that the sheer virulence of Islamic memes enables them to escape the
bounds of their original context, then one has to wonder why it is that
they continue to remain true to their own feeble memelings. An
inferiority complex?

This is precious!
Notwithstanding all philosophy, I wonder where the hell is the invisible
cogwheel between the elusive "realm of the unfalsifiable" which we are
not even allowed to touch and the world we live in... That cogwheel
which never fails to provide us with cheap motivation for big deeds such
as crusades.
Maybe it is somewhere in the stabilizing circuitry in our heads which
allows us to know "all we need to know"... In which case too much
stability can have bizarre effects.
