What a hornet's nest this guy is:
J. Michael Bailey is Chair of the Psychology Department at Northwestern
University <http://www.tsroadmap.com/info/northwestern-university.html>.
In March 2003, he published a book called /The Man Who Would Be Queen:
The Science of Gender-Bending and Transsexualism/
<http://www.tsroadmap.com/info/man-who-would-be-queen.html>. Many see
this book as the most defamatory book written about gender variance
since Janice Raymond wrote /The Transsexual Empire/ in 1979.

<snip>
The Northwestern researchers measured the psychological and
physiological sexual arousal in homosexual and heterosexual men and
women as they watched erotic films. There were three types of erotic
films: those featuring only men, those featuring only women and those
featuring male and female couples. As with previous research, the
researchers found that men responded consistent with their sexual
orientations. In contrast, both homosexual and heterosexual women showed
a bisexual pattern of psychological as well as genital arousal. That is,
heterosexual women were just as sexually aroused by watching female
stimuli as by watching male stimuli, even though they prefer having sex
with men rather than women.

[Blunderov] hey there Walter I'm suspicious of these conclusions. To best
of my knowledge men are equally aroused by female/female and female/male
pornography. True, 'straight' men are not as aroused by male/male
pornography as women are by female/female displays. But why does this mean
that men are less ambivalent than women? If it was the case that men were
only aroused by female/female stimuli I might be more persuaded...

I'm not quite sure what's going on here but I suspect a category error of
some species.

In any case it's seems very ephemeral evidence upon which to conclude that
there is a physical difference in the brains of the genders. Not, of course
that there isn't such a difference. Other evidence seems to suggest this
quite strongly. But not, ImV, this 'argumentum ad pornography' (If that
bastard Latin doesn't get the Hermit out of retirement nothing will!)

Best Regards

Not that I ever look at porn, but I am one man who dislikes ANY male in porn. I truly cannot stand male/female porn. Female alone or female/females stuff is the only stuff I would enjoy, you know, if I looked at porn.,

I agree wholeheartedly.  Hey, that might make an interesting poll:

I prefer porn that features only one woman stripping
I prefer porn that features two or more women “working out”
Porn just isn’t porn without at least one penis

I’ll have a #2 on the rocks, please.

I don't know. I think that if I were ever to watch porn, I would allow ONE penis in it.

I would just consider the one penis in it to be my avatar.

Albeit a much smaller representation.

That is, you know, if I looked at porn.

[Blunderov]Thinking about the experiments more closely; it now seems to me
that it is our old friend the 'hidden assumption' at work. Yes, the
experiments did measure genital responses. But what they signally (if you
will excuse the pun) failed to do was to measure the actual reasons for
these responses.

The assumption that male responses to male/female pornography are for the
same reasons as the female responses to it needs to be proved.

Best Regards.

[rhinoceros]
I am posting this because all 7 links mentioned here come from the one side of this controversy -- the Transexual Roadmap site and Dr. Joan (ex. Jonathan) Roughgarden. Transexual organizations all over the world have taken issue with Michael Bailey's "The Man Who Would Be Queen", and the first pages of a google search are dominated by this side of the argument.

Bailey, the author of this "popular" book  is an aknowledged and peer reviewed scholar in his field (that does not mean that he is always right, of course). The main issue which has enraged the transexual community is Bailey's "autogynephilia" theory of transexualism.

His answers to some of the criticism can be found here:
http://www.psych.nwu.edu/psych/people/faculty/bailey/controversy.htm

Oddly, Bailey's controversial book has also been a finalist for an award by the Lambda Literary Foundation which is "devoted to the recognition and promotion of gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual writing"

http://www.lambdalit.org/Lammy/lammy_2003_finalists.html

for which one of his critics wrote:

http://ai.eecs.umich.edu/people/conway/TS/LynnsReviewOfBaileysBook.html
"It would be like nominating 'Mein Kampf' for a
literary prize in Jewish studies."

The book itself is available online for free here:

The Man Who Would Be Queen: The Science of Gender-Bending and Transsexualism
http://www.nap.edu/openbook/0309084180/html/

I'll take this chance to point you at an interesting older (1994) article on gender assignment:
