i was going to reply to this column...but i think if we craft a reply and send it from 'cov'...it would be good publicity and free advertising...
please reply to discuss for a reply...mind word limits...remember it reflects the cov...
my points:
1.'gay gene' exists..comes from mommy...its purpose is that its probably exists in the X chromosome(which appears twice in women) to compensate for its obvious handicap as the sole X in men...evolution justifies the presence of the gay gene..detailed info in genome by matt ridley...between chapter 6 and 7..chapter called 'conflict'...
2.all of us are 'female' during conception...sex is determined by the amount of testosterone flooding the still forming fetus....which in turn affects hormone release etc
3.birth order theory by ray blanchard...
will elaborate if interest is shown...remaining time: 24 hours

Joe Dees:
Sorry about the truncated email.
There is also the German study, that showed that children born to German women immediately post-WW II were more likely to be gay. Supposedly, a situation of increased stress - typical of hunger situations such as famine - causes a different hormonal bath for the developing fetus, which results in an increased incidence of homosexuality. The idea that these homosexual offspring would spend their resources caring for their siblings' offspring is only half the story. The other half is the fact that since they would not be having children of their own, the total number of children born in the next generation would decrease, allowing scarce resources to be spread more generously between them.

...Mermaid, i've had friends that proposed this idea before (regarding fetal testosterone exposure), and while it sounds good on paper, it seems to depend on the 'gay or not gay' concept. the problem with this is that the "exclusively homosexual male population" in the united states is around 0.9% according to Newsweek's sex study - the most extensive study of its kind in history with more than 115,000 participants. an additional 9.8% of men declared themselves as 'bi-sexual' with an additional 11% of men stating that they had "seriously considered homosexual activity, but had never actually acted on these thoughts".
....my point is that the vast majority of adams and steves are still likely to procreate down the road.
.... my pet theory is that gay-ism is a slight and subtle breakdown in programming whereby a person has problems in accurately identifying the 'genetically receptive' counterpart for purposes of reproduction...i would wager that among the 9.8% of bi-sexuals you would find an even spread among the "nearly exclusively attracted to men, but will make an exception on rare occasions" and the, "nearly exclusively attracted to women, but will make an exception on rare occasions" and all the different shades of preference in between.
...when i consider why i find women so appealing, it is difficult to quantify if i exclude tits and puss. i have to start looking at things like facial structure(petite/femine structures), voice tone, softness of angles, body language, lack of body/facial hair, smell and other subtle differences. it's easy to see how if one's senses are much less acute in this way, mix-ups could occur, triggering even more profound chemical signals resulting in a cascade of attraction and emotion, resulting in true desire/love and the resulting social identification and even personality adjustment.

From talking to many homo/bi-sexuals (mostly women) the major factor appears to be that they would have had a less successful heterosexual identity than they do now. I would bet that appearance is highly correlated. It seems in almost all cases what is to gained is status. Many females homo/bi have average - low aesthetics. A contributing factor is how manly a female looks and how feminine a male looks. Why? because manly women are more desirbale by other homo/bi women than they are by men and vice versa. I bet if you look close enough most of these individuals lived less than satisfactory lives. Of course it's not a conscious choice. At some time the cognitive dissonance builds up and a possible ressolution is to change sexual orientation. Probably induced by a time of more extreme stress. Most people like to recreate stories like "I remember when bobby was 5 wearing dresses" trying to make the world make sense to themselves. But this is not realistic.
I know many ex-religious people that are atheist simply because they didn't fit into the religious community, lower thier status and made them less happy. The greatest shifts in a human mind don't have to come from hours of introspection and analysis, they come from depression, desperation and the need to escape.

Friends, and friends of friends. Maybe it's just that I have and eye for it. Or whatever. But the stereotypical “hairy lesbian” seems to be more of an exception around here, not the rule.

ludicrously sexy? where do you see them? on television in NY??
[quote from: simul on 2004-06-19 at 09:01:28] Most of the lesbian women I know are ludicrously sexy.
But maybe that's because I live in NY.
Besides, popular aesthetics are completely arbitrary and are culturally based.
Personal aesthetics are, well, personal and vary as widely as physical appearances.
Your theory seems to presuppose that there is something called “aesthetic” that is normative.
