Copying from another mailing list:

<begin quote>
The deadly sins were first brought up by Evagrius of Pontus, a greek theologian (345-399). In order of increasing seriousness he included the following 8: Gluttony, Lust, Avarice, Sadness, Anger, Acedia, Vainglory, and Pride.

Pope Gregory later reduced the list to the 7 sins of Pride, Envy, Anger, Sadness, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust.

Sadness was replaced by Sloth in the 17th century.

Trying to read behind the changes, we notice that:

- Pride, Anger, Gluttony, and Lust remained unchanged.

- Acedia (=indifference, apathy) was the first mortal sin dropped.from the list. Perhaps Pope Gregory wanted to encourage the faithful to mind their own business.

- Avarice  was replaced with Greed.

- Vainglory, which was mainly aimed at the accomplished, was replaced by Envy, which discouraged the less fortunate as well.

- Sadness was finally allowed in the 17th century, and was replaced with the deadly sin of Sloth. I am not sure if it included intellectual sloth though, which would bring Apathy back.
