I just received a virus infected message from the mailing list, claiming to originate from me.  At least that was all I saw in the email headers. The topic was "Fax Message received."

The virus was in an attached zip file which was password protected (so that the antivirus scanners wouldn't catch it), and the password for opening the zip was in a GIF file. Apparently its target audience was the technically competent but "not very alert" users.

The good folks at Cox Cable offer server-side spam and virus filtering now.

They send me notices of the attempted send of any virus-containing email.

They caught the one you guys mentioned and directed it to their assumedly VERY large trash can

...funny thing, 15yrs ago we tended to assume things were pretty much as
advertised.  nowadays, if you dont assume things are spam, scam or virus
first and foremost, youre in for a lot of wasted time and money.  of course
i didnt open the fax.  if it had been from you there would have been a very
"rhinocerous smelling" intro message that wouldve made sense.  this sort of
thing is my password these days.

I never saw it.  Virus scanner and spamassasin both flagged it.

You really need a personal Bayesian/AI device these days.  Not just for email, but also for web browsing, etc.
