Actually war, disease and other causes of death that are not resource-based have historically produced population explosions. People reproduce in reaction to fear and anticipation of death.
Do a google search for "malthus and sustainable human population", the first article explains it.
Basically lower expected lifespans and oppression of women produce population booms.
So AIDS, SARS and the rest will only make people have more babies... that's all.
It makes sense, evolutionarily.
