1) The New UNESCO Source Book for Science Teaching, 254 pages, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization 1979, Dfl. 21.60 from TOOL; also from UNESCO, 7 Place de Fontenoy, 75700 Paris, France; low-cost Asian edition available to countries in Asia from Charles E. Tuttle Company, 2-6, Suido l-chome, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan 112.

Hey!
I came from a solid Montessori background, and turned out perfectly fine.
Maybe the particular teacher was a skanky bitch, but all the Montessori
teachers I've had (most of whom I still keep in touch with) were pretty
great teachers who instilled in me a strong love of math and science.
Everyone has their own experiences, though :p

If schools are considered a necessary thing, then Montessori schools are better than many others in teaching socialization and instilling enthusiasm for learning in younger children. However, it should not be forgotten that they are religious.
For older children, I'm going to suggest (without data to hand) that they are less successful in the hard subjects, based only on a vague memory of comparative first year failure rates at tertiary institutions.
But I didn't think the skanky bitch was one until she failed to return a set of books, and I'm sure that that had nothing to do with where she taught and didn't mean to imply it.

Hmm... I was never aware of this.
There was never any real religious component to the education that I had
when I was in Montessori schools, so this is a surprise.
I do agree though that they're not really suited for more than a middle
school education, because they don't demand the rigor that is necessary in
higher learning.
But the theory of education is not something I am well versed in,
regardless...
And yes, I do feel better, thank you, Hermit :]
