No, it's the unvarnished truth. The French are passing ther buck to the
US because, among other reasons, They fear what their substantial
indigenous Muslim population would do if they did not. They would also
like to preserve their lucrative oil contracts, avoid discovery of their
sanction-violating collusions vis-a-vis weapons sales, and recapture
their past glories as a globa power by becoming an oppositional pole to
the US. All of this figures into their position. They had no problems
acting outside the UN mandate when they recently invaded the Ivory
Coast and militarily dictated their own solution to the civil war underway
there - one that cedd the Muslim rebels much more power than they
had been able to seize on their own.
