All war should be criticized.  This doesn't exactly make me a pacifist, but
it makes me stand up for their right to criticize our government and this
war. Is this not the great test of reason?  The only government worth having
is the one we hold accountable through criticism.  Please consider peace.

Love,

-Jake

Bill:

Sometimes war is the proper course, that doesn't make me a warmonger, but it makes me stand up for their right to support our government and this war. When a war will save many times more than it will ever kill and stop a genuine genocidal dictator, sometimes it's right to support a government that is acting in just and fair manner. Both criticism and praise make for a government worth having. The current peace costs 50,000 plus a year in Iraqi lives. Please consider war.

Who assumed that it had anything to do with me. You were dealing with "idealists". Don't be flattered. Be ashamed. It was a lousy piece of writing.

I have no idea what you are refering to. I am frequently flattered,  never ashamed and I have not written lousily in over 200 years.

Now cheer up, we have a war to fret about and Iraqi/Allied propaganda to debunk.

...i am SOOOO sympathetic to France with regards to their non-support of
U.S. war efforts.  people dont seem to realize a few crucial points behind
their decision: namely that they are filled with nutso shithead algerians
and that they are quite a bit closer to the arab world than we are.  i think
it is uncle sam's responsability in this case to give a knowing wink and a
pat on the back and say, "go ahead my friend and sit this one out, i can
understand your position".  the united states and france have an ancient
comraderie that cant be easily tarnished, but they are in a really difficult
situation with regards to the arab question.  besides, they can just refer
to their assistance to us in our independance war and say we owe them one:)

Come to think of it, what's with the surge of anti-France-ism lately? Some
of it seems downright ridiculous, like the House's decision to rename
"French Fries" "Freedom Fries" (Just for the record, I don't know why you
even call them french fries).

...the line between bravery and stupidity is at times a very small one.  go
visit paris for a week and you'll see what i mean...the "enemy within" is an
extremely real thing there.  with millions of Algerian and arab nutters
residing in france, it would be extremely dangerous for them to outwardly
support such a confrontation...not to mention their geographical proximity
to the 'danger' areas.  i think we owe it to them to understand.  germany
however, has less of an excuse.

...and who are we to go calling people cowards?  am i running over to fight
in the war?  are you?  it's easy for us to speak such brave words knowing
that we will never be called upon to back them up.  you and i are equal
cowards in this case.

Quote from: Jake Sapiens on 2003-03-20 17:42:24

I say the Germans won on this.  They were the first of the major US allies to stick their tongue out at us on this whole war on Iraq issue.  If they had stood alone against the US they would have looked "irrelevant".  Had it been any other president in the White House, it might have been a really dangerous risk.  But instead the Germans could rely on Bush's overtly Christian Crusading attitude combined with the general stupidity of consistent unilateralism to persuade other major players including France to listen to their people more.  I think the tendency of Americans to blame this all on the French is really silly and short sighted.  It only reveals a short attention span.  The real troublemaker here was Germany (as usual).  But strangely I feel no animosity toward them for that.

Love,

-Jake

P.S. re: "I think the tendency of Americans to blame this all on the French is really silly and short sighted."  I would add here, that I personally know a great many thoughtful Americans who do not go for this knee-jerk French bashing.  Indeed, I imagine that even many in our pro-war factions know better than this.  We do, of course have plenty of couch potatoe quarterbacks in America, who may indeed proudly pour out perfectly fine French wine on CNN in something that passes for an ideological fit.  As a proud American, I plan to drink more French wine, myself!

Love,

-Jake
