At least some technical moderation is needed.

While I don't want to ruin anyone's fun, as a user of the BBS interface I have been personally annoyed by the single-post threads started by Joe whenever he remembers something, which push the other topics out of view.

As an additional benefit, I might even take a printout of those posts if they were all in one place and pass it around to friends for their entertainment. It would be even more funny if it included references to some of my own relatives.

Effective immediately both Hermit and Joe are on probation for "conduct
unbecoming". All of their messages sent to the list will bounce to me for
approval.

I find that question rather ironic.  For over two months Hermit forbore, and for some time in his absence you perservered in your crusade of victomology engaging other people on the list in vulgar flame fests ABOUT Hermit.  And yet David did not remove you.  If however, he had moderated you at that time I would have found it entirely appropriate.

...i was beginning to think that the recent intensity of hate-posts had
grown to such a degree that by comparison, my little feud with Mermaid so
long ago was made to almost look like a romantic tryst among star-crossed
lovers.

...the other day i was contemplating some article commenting on how, out of
some 50 billion species which have existed throughout our planets history,
only one (us) has acheived true "intelligence"...and that only occurring
within the last 100,000 yrs.  it was an article on the way to saying that
intelligent life might indeed be extremely extremely rarified throughout the
cosmos.  Bunk i say.

...it seems reasonable by some complex fits of internal reasoning that on
any planet, cold blooded creatures will be the first to develop...with warm
blooded creatures to be far far down the road.  and if im not mistaken,
great intellectual advancement and evolution can only occur within the
mammalian form.  this makes sense to me now...feedback...gotta run.
