Considering that I received this missive at the same time as the original essay, a little patience might not have gone amiss..

As I recall, Kierkegaard came to take the view that despair was the inevitable conclusion of our existential predicament, with religious faith being the only alternative. As such, I think it would be interesting to explore the religious dimensions more. Christians have long seen suicide as an entirely expected fate for atheists (e.g. Kristeva's the black sun), while atheists have suggested in return that the expectation of an afterlife cheapens one's commitment to existence (e.g. Dawkins taking the view that suicide bombing is largely dependent on expectation of an afterlife).
