My prejudice, if you will, is that there's often something a little selfish about parenting, that for many parents children are a means of fulfilling their own wishes by proxy. To some parents children are objects in wax, to be figured or disfigured accordingly. Obviously, that sounds a little harsh, but I wouldn't say that's all bad, since the other side of the coin is being able to pass on positive experiences and help children avoid negative ones. That said, when one lives in an individualistic society I expect the pressure is to On the whole, I found Houellebecq's honesty on the subject refreshing (I suspect the above applies to many parents, but in an indvidualistic society few would admit it). As I recall, genetic alteration and cloning have been themes in his novels before, which are not, I should observe, science fiction.
