After "experimenting" with computer games I came to the conclusion that real world animals behave a bit like the computerly generated ones...
Males:
Male lions roars at the wildebeest for a simple reason, acting on instinct he 'selects' the weaker individual by a simple scare tactic {1}
{1}: less energy input for a successful pride hunt.
{2}: Everything is a system built on top of sub-systems, right?
Animals do have something like a mind that is tightly connected with their 5 basic senses, so if the lion confuses the pray's senses enough it's a win win for mother Nature: Lions get's fed and the weaker pray animal get's "eliminated" from the "game" of Life.

Now, female lions rely on communication {1} and coordination {2}, more energy input, no roars... just hunting...
They select weaker individuals from the herd and this time it's win win for mother Nature IF the female packs have selected a right "strategy" and successful execution of that "strategy." AND the herd fails to execute it's own plan of "defense."
In other words, the female packs are being "selected" BY the herd and vice versa. Group 'mentality' is in play => Selection of groups/packs against selection of individuals
{1}: Pheromones exchange (chemically 'encoded' "memes"), hearing and vocalizations (sound wave 'encoded' "memes"), eyesight(?)...
{2}: The herd "tighten" it's defenses, keeps it's young animals at the center and brings the "horns" to the front, IF the herd fails to do that, then female lions win, lionesses are successful in braking the defenses :-/
