What is Radiance?

Last Tuesday's chat was about Radiance.  While this was a good chat, I'm not sure that an IRC channel is the best way to flush out a concept like this.  I suspect that a bulletin board will be more conducive to the development of the Radiance concept.

So I'm going to take a stab at defining what I get out of the Radiance discussion so far.  I invite others to do so as well or to build on/criticize what follows.

What is Radiance?

There exists an objective reality that is external and independent of my subjective awareness.  While I may only be subjectively aware of this reality, interactions and repeated experiences with it allows me to increase my understanding of it.

Depending on one's philosophy, opinions will vary greatly on a subject like this, but acceptance of the premise that there is an objective reality allows me to better express my understanding of Radiance.

Researchers of all sorts, be they physicists, economists, biologists or philosophers, are in a constant quest for laws and models that express the workings of different aspect of reality.  When I look at these models, I observe that some are more fundamental than others; these fundamental models can usually be applied across different fields of activities.

Example of these fundamental models include: game theory, chaos theory, evolution theory, and certainly a number of others.  To me, the fact that these theories are applicable to various fields of research suggests that they reveal  attributes of reality that are more fundamental to the workings of the universe in which we live.

Radiance is a super-goal that an individual can strive towards by researching these fundamental aspects of reality and by applying lessons learned from this research to day-to-day life.

For Radiance to be popularized, it will require that some of these principles be enumerated and documented. Popularization of Radiance will also depend on the supporting organizations and individuals' ability to rationally derive practical and applicable conclusions from the fundamental principles.

If Radiance litterature can convey both the principles and some practical guidelines, Radiance seekers will have new tools available to them to become increasingly aware of the principles' application to various aspects of their life, thereby enhancing the seekers' experience of life.

This enhanced awareness is the essence of Radiance; an enhanced experience of life is the reward that is gained by its seeker.

True Reality™ is an impossibility.

I wouldn't necessarely disagree with that.  For example, Lee Smolin makes a pretty good case in "Three Roads to Quantum Gravity" to the effect that there is no fixed background, everything is a process and trying to take a momentary "snapshot" of reality is an impossible and silly notion.

The fact remains that humans are not conscious of the sub-atomic nature of the universe.  While the quest for Radiance might include an increased awareness of this aspect of reality, our conscious day-to-day interactions happen at a more "object-oriented" level of abstraction.

I think we can apply a similar line of reasoning as that used by Dennett in "Freedom Evolves" where he bridges the gap between a deterministic universe and free will.  He does so by creating levels of abstraction (physical level, design level, etc).

I suggest that while True Reality might be an impossibility at some fundamental level, it remains an objective reality at our level of consciousness.

Agreed.

Question: How do we justify our Radiance to others of different ethics, philosophies, faiths, and fallacies?
