Author’s notes for revision: Inspired by an unnecessary apology from Blunderov. Unnecessary because the process as implemented in our current BBS software is unfortunately unintuitive.

Abstract
A guide to using only the BBS facilities to store an image to be included in a posting. Where this is not required, a simple link to the image file will suffice (see the "Link to Image in BBS Post" in the main article). Generally, the use of the procedure documented here is prefered as the resulting local storage of the image prevents broken links should the source image be deleted or moved.

FAQ: A Method for Including Images in BBS Posts

Using Images on the Church of Virus BBS

While the CoV encourages the use of images and pictures on its BBS, we request that posters have the right to post material to the BBS and that posters understand that they are granting the CoV the limited right to distribute the images posted. Where the poster does not have this right, then the poster should be posting under the doctrine of "fair use" and as such, the posting should attribute the source.

As historic documents on our BBS may be reread or referred to in the future, it is prefered (but not absolutely necessary) that posters save a local copy of images on the BBS before linking to the local copy, as this prevents broken links should the source image be deleted or moved. It also prevents users on our BBS from imposing an unfair load on other servers as happens when links to external sites are included.

The following guide will hopefully prove useful in guiding users to make local copies of images. Should this not be desired, the use of simple image tags does allow linking to external image files (and the "Link to Image in BBS Post" infra, shows how to do this).

General assistance in BBS markup may be found at "FAQ: BBS Markup."

What is an Image (As far as the BBS is concerned anyway).

The BBS file attachment only accepts files of types: txt, jpg, gif, pdf, png, zip
A limitation of 400 kB is imposed.
The BBS "img" tag only supports jpg, gif and png files

Resize Image for BBS

If the image takes to much memory (bearing in mind the 400 kB limit) or takes to much screen real-estate (I generally suggest keeping the width of BBS images below around 6" or 600 pixels) then resize the image. If you don't have appropriate software on your computer (I strongly recommend "ImageMagick" for batch reprocessing and "The Gimp" for a full image editor. Both programs are available for at least Linux, Windows and OSX), then you may find an on-line tool such as http://www.resize2mail.com/ helpful.

In any case, save the resulting image to your computer.

Save Image to BBS

Connect to the "Test Area" on the Church of Virus BBS and select the last page of the "Just some attachments used elsewhere" thread. Press "Reply".
Add some attribution text if desired and then use the "Browse" button next to the "Attach" field below the "Message Area" to select the file on your computer that you want to post to the BBS.

Press "Post"

Get Image Link for Later Use

Select your reply (which will be the most recent (i.e. the last) on the "Just some attachments used elsewhere" thread and right click on the image you posted. Select "Properties" to see the file name or location. Highlight the filepath. It will be something like, "http://www.churchofvirus.org/bbs/attachments/somefile.ext" where somefile.ext will be the name of the file you uploaded. You want to highlight this and copy it to the clipboard.

Link to Image in BBS Post

Now use the full filepath as obtained above in your post surrounded by image tags wherever you want to insert the picture you uploaded. e.g.
Code:

[img]http://www.churchofvirus.org/bbs/attachments/somefile.ext[/img]

After you enter "Post", your message will show the image in the appropriate place in your posting.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. - Steven Weinberg, 1999
