One thing that has caught my attention however is the nature of "luck" and how virians view this concept. It would seem to me that luck is a slightly superstitious idea (meme?) that would be at odds with the virtue of reason. Yet, the effect of luck/fate memes as a rational for casues and events that seem to be uncontrollable is still predominant and invasive.
Luck is valid concept only when reviewing the past. You can say that you had good (or bad) luck if fortune goes your way (or not) but it is not predictive. Having previously had good luck doesn't alter your chances in the future. That is the so-called gamblers fallacy.
true dat. if you flip a coin 100 times, and it lands heads up 100 times in a row, the chances of it landing heads up on the next flip are still always 50-50. odds of individual actions performned in succession are not cumulative.
using this reasoning, luck, by definition, cannot be extrapolated as a predictor of future events.
