Learning C/C++? Suggestions?

For the reason that I want to be able to read C/C++ source code, I'm taking it upon myself to learn those languages. Noting that Hermit has a PhD, Lucifer has an advanced degree, and perhaps even most of the CoV members have degrees in computer science or working knowledge of C/C++, what  is an excellent resource for the C/C++ student for learning those languages.

The only experience I have with actual programming on my own was MS Q-Basic and varying derivatives.

I found Lippman's C++ Primer useful (1st ed. over 10 years ago). I see it is in its 3rd ed. now. The Amazon reviews are not great.

I've heard good things about Eckel's Thinking in C++.
