If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man.

Cogita Ergo Sum - and that summed up Cogita.

(In this context a PhD is a Pretty & highly-intelligent dog).

Yes, one of my Border Collies. And yes, she was more than a fine dog. A lot more.

Thanks Hermit

Please notice that I deliberately did not quote Descartes* and thus did not misquote anything. Cogita was a bitch, not a dog. Thus the feminising 'a' ending of a neuter noun which shares the stem of the verb used by Descartes (whose Latin was anyway decidedly iffy by Roman standards (he used a bastardised form of medieval Latin hybridised with Old French)). vide:
  • cogito -are [to turn over in the mind , to think, reflect]; sometimes [to intend, plan]. Hence partic. cogitatus -a -um, [considered, deliberate]; n. pl. as subst. [thoughts, reflections, ideas]. Adv. cogitate, [thoughtfully].

I'd suggest that false modesty is far more obnoxious than arrogance justified by capability. Unfortunately far too few arrogant people have capabilities which begin to approach their arrogance. This is quite explicable due to the observed fact that peoples' perception of their abilities invariably inversely follows their competence.

PS, While Hitler's beliefs might have been "inept" (what does that mean in this context?), he was a quite orthodox Roman Catholic Christian (refer e.g. [ Hermit, FAQ: Hitler the "Good Christian", 2002-03-14 ] ), sharing his beliefs about e.g. the Jews, with most Americans and many English until some time in the 1950s.

*And yes, Descartes signed his name this way, with a terminal "s".

(1)[a] Excessively use quotes belonging to and throw in names of prominent historical philosophers, making certain to spell their names incorrectly.

[b] When quoting (in)famous works of literature, always spell their titles incorrectly as well. (ie. "Main Kampf")

(2) When you first join a stimulating on-line congregation of intellectuals, make sure your first sure-fire attention-grabber is to insult one of the most long-standing, well-respected and intelligent members of the aforementioned group.

(3) Clarify the obvious as much as possible. (ie. when translating "I think therefore I am.")

(4) Simultaneously feign affection and superiority.

(5) Spell the word "intelligence" wrong.

(6) Ignore all traces of irony completely, even if it is slapping you in the face, fellating a midget, and giving a steamy lap dance to the beat of Michael Jackson's "Thriller".

(7) Be sure to mention Hitler somewhere in your post, even if it makes no sense and is completely out of context.  There is no such thing as a proper flame without the mention of Hitler somewhere therein.

NOW GO FORTH AND FLAMETH!
