Democracy: everyone agrees it isn't perfect, but is it optimal? Or is it out-dated? Can we conceive of something better?

Space: Should humans explore space? Is it feasible? economical? Why should we go? What are the consequences of not?

Apathy and Passion: How can we control our own motivation? How can we deal with lack of motivation?

Please comment and/or make more suggestions.

Human Rights: what are rights? where do they come from? are they really inalienable?

Evil: what is the nature of evil? is it relative? arbitrary? does it exist only in people's minds (as a meme)?

The transparent society: will it be a good thing or bad thing if everyone is potentially under surveillance all the time? Is it inevitable?

IP rights: Can you imagine a world without intellectual property rights (patents, copyright). What would happen?

We had a good chat on the "evil" topic on Tuesday.  We focussed a lot on whether evil was an inherently subjective thing.  Sat took the "pro-evil" side, which I found out was that evil indeed was an inherently subjective thing, and perhaps just a dangerous meme.  I argued that evil does indeed exist within a social universe.  Outside that, forces of nature have no inherent goodness or evilness even though we may mythologize such things.  And that we can define evil in some rulelike manner.  It involves deception or force, and is generally a destructive thing.  Of course the situation in which such an act happens is entirely controlling as to its evilness.  Sat's arguments were quite persuasive, I would have to concede that a lot of what many people think of as evil is simply overwrought, irationally biased and misdirected emotion.  But at the same time, I still think we can agree about things like Jeffery Dahmer, genocide, and so forth.

Thanks to everyone who participated, I enjoyed it.

Love,

-Jake

What is wrong with this world? What are the most important problems facing us today? If you could fix anything, what would you fix first?
