Spotted on the extropians list. I had to test the colours in an image processing program to make sure it wasn't a hoax.

I refused to believe it - but ya, Photoshop gives me an RGB of: 107, 105, 108 for both squares.

I assume that it is the contrast between the colors in the checkerboard pattern that keep the mind from seeing them as the same color. Cool.

Yeah, I saw this one on another board. It's tricky, but I believe part of the illusion comes from the letters 'A' and 'B' having different colors...

I believe* it's due to both reasons mentioned.

Another more arguable explanation is a scotoma due to the gradient shading of the surrounding/contrasting squares.

Also any one who got too wrapped up in the movie "PI" might also attempt to develope a mathmatical pattern/formula to explain/measure the scotoma.

Definately an awesome optical illusion.

*Oh shit did I just use the word believe?

I'm not so sure the contrasting colors of the letters 'A' and 'B' contribute to the illusion.

that's right, I don’t think the letters are important to the subconscious and much as conscious in this case, we use them as conscious reference points, the A and B letters are both handled by a separate part of the brain normally, the left side deals with specifics like letters and the right hemisphere deals with visuals

http://www.geocities.com/player2000gi/hemispheric_specialization.htm

I guess it compensates for shadows in our hardware / software blend, wonder if it’s in our DNA, or is only derived from it? I don't remember focusing around many shadows in my past...
An amazing illustration of the mind, and never underestimate the powers of denial

Doesn’t matter though, I could be wrong still, complexities at every corner, maybe someone will edit out the letters one day?

The Rhinocerous is, as always, correct. The squares are different colours by definition. A knight will always land on a square of opposite colour to it's square of origin.

Best Regards

Hmm... maybe not always. I have noticed that sometimes he changes his mind along the way. But of course, he never takes back his moves
