I take it the mailing list is more active than the BBS?

Apparently, yes. Most people just use e-mail.

Also, the BBS demand more time and effort. When I post something on the BBS I have to spend more time to think it over and check references, because it stays there for everyone to see, while in the mailing list my occasional blunders are quickly burried by time and I can write off the top of my head.

Unfortunately, the "wisdom" contained in the BBS remains unnoticed by most :-)

Everthing posted to the mailing list ends up in the BBS archives, so time won't bury your errors

If I post a reply to a message from the mailing list which is here on the BBS, will said message go out to mailing list members?

Posts and replies to threads outside the mailing list (such as this one) stay here.

Posts and replies to the mailing list, posted either from here or by email, go to everyone subscribed to the mailing list.

But to receive those messages by email you have to subscribe to the mailing list separately, by sending an email to

majordomo@lucifer.com

from your email address, containing in the body (not in the subject) the line

subscribe virus

The plan is to phase out the majordomo mailing list over time and add a new feature to this BBS that would allow receiving messages via email. You will be able to subscribe to boards and/or individual threads.

I think that it's a good idea. Not everyone can access their email everywhere, but you can access the BBS. Besides, even though the mailing list is more active, from what I've seen a lot of it is just personal/character attacks.
