We have not quit evolving. There are people being born without wisdom teeth, and such. This is a small step forward for us. Likewise there are changes taking place in us all the time. They are just very slow. Simply because you never notice, doesn't mean that evolution has stopped. You need quit hoping for a massive sudden change in our biological make-up, and start realizing that Homo Sapien Sapien will someday evolve to be the thrice wise man.

I don't think human evolution is over. It may at times become more active in one arena even as another seems to stabilize. We have certainly been evolving memetically and technologically at a rather fast clip compared to previous generations. As we increase our ability to genetically engineer other species, it shall only be a matter of time until we try it out more directly on ourselves. I'm betting that will mark the begining of another great speciation event. And of course we are right on schedule as such evolutionary events tend to occur in the wake of a wave of extinctions which we seem to be witnessing even now.

I am fearful of very few things, but there are two which were just mentioned that frighten me quite a bit. One is humans manipulating human genetics... some people are just too stupid to be trusted with genetics. The other is the extinction of species of life. Species' diversification is the one safeguard the Earth has with which to perpetuate life, even should a worldwide disaster occur. Hopefully, more people will learn this, and we may have a renewal in green movements that actually think.

Fistfull: I am fearful of very few things, but there are two which were just mentioned that frighten me quite a bit. One is humans manipulating human genetics... some people are just too stupid to be trusted with genetics.

Mo: Fear is really a quite pointless reaction. Fear rarely inspires reasonable thought, indeed it is usually employed to shut down dialogue and rational criticism. As for manipulating human genetics, we are already doing an incredible amount of that through modern medical technology. People used to die much more frequently and rarely with any opportunity to reproduce from all sorts diseases which we simply use anti-biotics etc. to defeat today. Especially childhood diseases. True it may not be a direct manipulation of DNA, but it certainly has an overall effect on the gene pool probably more profound than any specific genetic manipulations. Other than increasing the overall human life span (which I assert is a good thing in terms of humans achieving better long-term thinking and planning) what is so frightening to you about humans genetically engineering themselves? I assert that whatever it is, is certainly no more frightening than the unintended consequences of modern human travel technologies.

Quite the opposite, we're evolving at dangerously high levels (we might burn out), fuelling the process with information & physical resources. For less than 300 years, we've become at least 30% taller (have you seen a real medieval armour? it's as if it was made for Ballins :-) ), we are eating much more energetic food (and yes, BigMacs are better than what a medieval peasant ate) & we have expanded our cognitive abilities beyond ANY expectations of our ancestors. Our lifespan is getting into the hundreds (look at Japan)... We are the hotshots of our local galactic arm

PS:
Evolution only stops when it's subjects are dead (part of the environment).
There is NO de-evolution (fallacy).

---
My bet is that in the next 100 years it would be decided if we would be capable of conquering the Milky way...
No fucking joke!

Cheat sheet:
Genetics: Finding the codes for renewable nervous cells.
Engineering: Quantum Computing (we have to try... might be useful)
Engineering: Usable fusion.
Genetics: On Demand genetic modification through pills (AIDS? mutate! Flu? mutate!)
Genetics & Biology: Taming some viruses & bacteria species to serve mankind (AIDS? -> has some kewl mutation algo -> USE IT)
Engineering: Conquering our solar system, as there is TONS of stuff just on the asteroid belt. Europa & some other moons are full of WATER: easy hydrogen (for fusion) & oxygen (life). Jupiter, Saturn & Neptune are big fucking fuel tanks (full of goodies).
Genetics & Engineering: Figuring out practical immortality & machine body enhancement.
Engineering: Finding the best reactive engine (the stuff that propels the spacecraft must fly out at speeds near sol)

This might be enough for the trek:
If we manage to achieve space travel at 1% ~ 4% sol we should be able to reach Alpha Centauri in about half a century...
Currently found extrasolar usable planets are in 100 ly -> In less than millenia we're there

Now, what about 1 000 000 years??
(Remember, your 'day' as practically immortal being is measured in years, you're only limited by resources)
And who knows... One day  we may learn how to suck suns & blackholes even

Move along people people, nothing to see here...
Just musings of a mad man...
Homogenising the pool is never good
