We got a positive mention on Bruce Eisner's blog. Eisner is an American writer, psychologist, and counterculture spokesman best known for his book Ecstasy: The MDMA Story.

Granted I've never read anything. But I stumbled on this interesting vanity page.
Mac Tonnie is a published author, essayist, and lecturer. And apparently an avid transhumanist. He may even be a member here, I don't know?

COV is linked from the transhumanism portion of his page(s).
I demand a better future.

I and everyone I know has become addicted to Facebook. It is a new(?) social networking hub along the lines of Myspace. It works via networks and friends to keep you in touch with those you trust and add. It has a vague "big brother" feel in how the interface keeps track of every freakin' move you (or anyone in your networks) make. That can feel creepy, but that is also its strength, and you do have an incredible amount of control of what people can see.

My point here is there is a neat little COV group. I have made the sixth member (so far). There is also a WTA group, and other interesting memes you can join.

Glenn Grant wrote A Memetic Lexicon in 1990. It has of course been massively spread ever since.

COV has a mention or two in the Memetics portion of his Meme Depot web-page.

A couple of paragraphs are excerpted below...

------

"I never imagined that this odd collection of words and definitions would turn out to be my most successful piece of writing. Since 1990 it has been printed in at least three magazines, hosted on dozens of websites, presented to standing-room-only audiences, translated into other languages, cited by respected scientists in serious academic contexts, inspired a weird pomo SF convention, and helped catalyse an online "religion" for rational atheists.

------
NOTE: His has links - I removed them.

"Then there's the Church of Virus, "a memetically engineered atheistic religion", which hosts a Lexicon expanded by David McFadzean. This version has been translated into Spanish by José Ma Filgueiras, and into German by Alex Schroeder. The "Church" also has a lively Virian BBS community."

I stumbled across a COV mention while Googling at work. This is an intensely faith-based blog titled LVB Research. There is a very negative transhumanism thread, and COV is mentioned.

The Transhumanist Agenda: Crimes Against Humanity

This write-up attempts to show transhumanism's links to fascism and eugenics as well as to devil worship. And along with many pictures contains such insights as:
"Transhumanism is actually a very dangerous religious cult..."

But yes, there is a review of the COV therein. Beginning of course with:

"WARNING: You may or may not get a computer virus at this website of “The Church of Virus”, so “Caveat emptor” (Let the buyer beware). Everyone can decide for themselves whether they want to go there or not."

That was very entertaining, thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Quote:

Sins in the Church of Virus

Dogmatism

“Through some twist of fate, western society has come to regard dogmatic faith as a virtue. To hold an idea as true despite all evidence to the contrary is an abdication of reason. Convictions are the end of knowledge, not the beginning; they are the enemy of truth more than lies.”

So, they are saying that the truth of God is a lie, and the lie of Lucifer is the truth. And faith in God is a “sin”, whereas no faith in God is “good”. Sound familiar to anyone? "Pleased to meet you, hope you guessed my name." - "Sympathy for the Devil", Rolling Stones, 1968.

Busted! :-)
