I've taken the next step and acquired half of an island sim. I invite you to explore Castle Radiance (click for SLURL) the new HQ for CoV in SL. I'm keeping my skybox in Hobak for now.

Gorgeous! Is that an anachronistic Virian Helipad on the roof? Did you remember to add landing lights?

Sorry for my slow response. I had to do some digging for the very well hidden current status on the open sourcing of the SL server/client prior to my reply.
I doubt very soon for the following reasons:- Time issues on my side. I can see SL taking a lot of time.
- Alpha SL drivers without released source code makes me very, very nervous. Having escaped this by abandoning M$, I'm very reluctant to get back into a developer dependent environment*. As an additional concern, I don't see commentary by people who have used this driver with Fedora 6 and don't see myself finding the time to debug other people's code - especially code missing a source bundle and documentation.
- I did not even find any information about prerequisites, beyond that the developers have been working on horribly outdated systems, with as standard on the distros they mention, much earlier versions of libraries etc. than I have. Not usually a good sign.
- Clearly a very slow development cycle on the product.
- No information on e.g. wine compatibility and the suspicion that it may not play very nicely with VMWare as it feels to me as if performance may be important to establishing an immersive environment.
All of that said, I look forward to joining you in the castle as soon as two or more of the above issues are resolved. For now, I lurk when I have the time (not enough) on IRC in #hermit and admire the occasional snapshots of the rather clever things you guys seem to be doing.
Kind Regards
Hermit
*Linden Labs intend to release everything as Open Source "shortly after everything has stabilized." Which makes me wonder if http://www.libsecondlife.org/ isn't going to be ready sooner?

I'm not sure where you are getting your info but Sat uses SL on FC6 without any mods or SL drivers. He says the bug fixes to the linux client come out weekly. The time issue is valid.

I've never used Second Life but seeing all this makes it very tempting. Not unlike The Hermit, one of my great hesitation is the amount of time this might demand... I might give it a shot with just a generic Avatar though. Is that where the #virus discussions are held nowadays?

I've set up a gateway so that weekly chats take place simultaneously in SL and IRC. Hope to see you there
