I'm selling my business, starting a new one, getting kicked out of my apartment. I'm a new dad, late filing taxes, and my wife has tendonitis.
I literally didn't have time to shit this afternoon.
So, why did I make time to post this message? --- To unsubscribe from the Virus list go to <http://www.lucifer.com/cgi-bin/virus-l>

First, read Bruce Sterling's "Distraction", and then read http://electionmethods.org.

If we can answer questions like this in the general case, we may get some deep insights into human motivations.
Short term gratification? Stress relief? Lack of external pressure to post messages? In general, why do things start to suck when you have to do them or when they're due at a specific time? Why do I start to resent the person with whom I arranged a date or appointment about 30 minutes before the date or appointment because now I'm having to hurry and get things dones in order to not be late?
Is there some other way of structuring society and work such that people aren't constantly suffering this sort of pressure? --- To unsubscribe from the Virus list go to <http://www.lucifer.com/cgi-bin/virus-l>

To feel connected. I find myself doing this too. During times of crisis my CoV activity increases. It's not the only time, boredom too get me going. Every once in a while I get involved due to some inspiration, or sometimes I find it once I get here. -Jake

[simul] I'm selling my business, starting a new one, getting kicked out of my apartment. I'm a new dad, late filing taxes, and my wife has tendonitis.
I literally didn't have time to shit this afternoon. So, why did I make time to post this message?
[hkhenson] I know, but do you really want to know the answer?
[rhinoceros] I am curious now. What could it be?
My best guess was the Principle of Least Action (aka slack) (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/cuius/idle/evolution/ref/leastact.html)
applied to an evolutionary trait such as Status Seeking.
Am I close?

Not just close, dead on target.
This is an accepted virtue in the Church of the Virus, that of a positive reputation. The reasons date back to the stone age when high status among the tribe members was positively associated with reproductive success.
Now if you admit to being a social primate who is motivated by seeking status (even if you are not consciously aware of this motivation) and you get hauled up before a US Federal Judge, you too might be condemned from the bench.
This has a particular amusing flavor since there is no more spectacular case of someone picking status over money since lawyers typically make a lot more money than judges.
