virus: Aikido and Spirituality

I've taken a few Aikido classes recently. So far, I recommend it.
What is “spirituality”? I have learned, recently, that it is not some amorphous concept that people believe in so that they don't have to think about the causes and effects of things.
It is, instead, the science of motivation, the logic behind faith, the wisdom of the unconcious mind, and the study of memetics. All of these things, and more, are spiritual.
A study of fractals and chaos is essential in understanting the dynamics of spirit, since a key to leading a spiritual life is in experiencing the power of “strange attractors” without being drawn in so deeply that ones capacity for reason is destroyed.
Recently, I engineered a ritual to imbue spirit into a plastic back massager that me and my girlfriend use. It worked. It's now a much more effective device. Too bad I can't do that with a ntwork server...
I'm shocked, considering the experimental nature of all spiritual practices, that it hasn't yet been considered a science.
I gues scientists are “spooked” by the terminology.

[Blunderov] I find it hard not to wonder whether the increased effectiveness does not arise more from an increased familiarity with the object than anything else.
I can accept that 'spirituality' encompasses those aspects of human existence not governed by the rational sense (love for instance, is often claimed to be a 'spiritual' state) but whether one can actually imbue a concrete object with this quality...well I'm skeptical.
But metaphor is a powerful tool. If it works for you - great!
Best Regards.

Of course it does. That's what spirituality *is*. A system of training technologies that enable people to become more familiar with each other, their environment, etc. than they would otherwise. Our ritual modified the way we saw the object. Mentally making it an object of effectiveness and significance allowed our conscious minds to relax under its influence... enhancing the physical effect of relaxation.
If, for example, we used it to ritualistically kill people with, I imagine the opposite effect would occur... increasing tension under its touch....

Metaphor and optimization are powerful tools that work for everyone.
I recently fell prey to a memetic effect. I told a group of friends to meet me under a balloon with a red X on it. I bought a mylar balloon, painted a red X on it and stood under it.
Half the people couldn't find me because they were looking for a red balloon. Of course... because people have been trained to lump "red" and "balloon"
Spirituality is an ancient science, sort of "psychosociology"...
It's also known as "memetic engineering". A subset of which is "motivational technology".
You can use these techniques to create powerful personal effects within yourself - heightened ability in almost any area.
So when someone says they are "spiritual", I take it to mean that they have mastered many aspects of memetic engineering within their life.
And when someone says they can see "energy" or they have "intuition", I take it to mean that they can deduce the prevailing memes and subtle memetic transfers going on in a room full of people, or in other "complex environments". They allow their mind to function such that it is not constrained by "linear" thought (meaning the recursive consciousness that dominates the mind, or the ego/chaotic-attractor state of mind).

[Blunderov] Lovely story. Well bagged sir!

[Blunderov] OK. I think I can buy most of this. Not too sure about ego/chaotic-attractor state of mind though - what is the limiting factor that retains the boundaries of the self intact?

One limiting factor is the self-reinforcing nature of behavior. People who act dominant attract others who are sumbissive and thus reinforce the dominant behavior. People who act depressed cause others to shy away from them, enhancing their depression.
Once our basic needs are met, we are no longer motivated by survival, so the survival instincts, themselves, fight for survival. We fear each other, and when we don't fear, we seek out fear. We go to movies and watch people dying so that we have more opportunity to fear. “Maybe my neighbor is some psycho!”
Our natural state is one of struggle with the universe/nature, and without this struggle we struggle with ourselves. Without the pattern-breaking forces of nature, we are comsumed by pattern.
A way to break this pattern is to see within it that it is self-destructive. It is, even, species-destructive.

Greetings,
I do not have the time to reply in full, but thought that I should point out 2 articles of interest that I posted to the BBS.
Towards a Naturalistic Spirituality
Spirituality Without Faith
“As I once mentioned to the list, in my musings on spirituality I have come to appreciate the difference between ‘belief’ and ‘experience’… and at the heart of spirituality is a ‘feeling,’ a feeling of interconnectedness, of being in love with life and the world, a touch and taste of the infinite.”
