Greetings Lee, and welcome! How would you define "artist"? Sometimes I consider the entire CoV an experiment in collaborative art. Does that count?

i would hope we limit the definition of art to sculpture, performance, painting, and architecture simply because if we expand it much further we lose any meaningful discussion at all. Not everything is art after all. Lots of people would include film and photography in that definition, but i think they both should be in separate posts except where they coincide with art. Does that definition keep us productive?

I've done some art also, it falls into two categories:
1. I fill hexagonal pentagonal square and triangular canvasses and then hinge them together to make giant polyhedra with drawings on the inside and outside. They are painting-sculptures. www.mathworld.com has the list of all possible convex polyhedra under johnson solids, or archimedean solids.
2. I've moved from location to location for the last 6 years drawing on the walls, carpets, and ceilings. It's been a creative explosion. I don't know why i do this since it seems antisocial and counterproductive, maybe it is bipolar disorder, or a runaway meme that i've adopted. Either way my landlords have been fuming, and the houses have been stained with ink.

The carpet i've been working on recently is 8 meters long, and about 3 wide. The largest polyhedral piece i've made is a ten inch to a side truncated octahedron (don't these things have great names?) here's the site to see the structure: http://mathworld.wolfram.com/TruncatedOctahedron.html . Most of my work in the past has been one bedroom apartments, though i've worked on a carpet this size once before. I haven't ever used spray paint like most graffiti artists. I hope the graffiti inside thing catches on. That would really liven up our drab white cubed life. Whenever i go into a room i see it as blank canvas, but i'm usually very civilized about it. So that answers your question, and then some!
Do you have a link for your work?

| Hiya Fishsuit! I tend to agree that a definition which means everything means nothing. Except (possibly) where art is concerned! It seems to me that art by its very nature is, well, non-contextual. It's something personal and revelatory which shouldn't need to be explained nor defined. After all, we all know what we like right? Perhaps one definition of art (mine?) would be that art is something completely external which finds its way... inside?! Never mind the people and events which move you every day, that being because they are within your circle and thus hold that power over you. Personally, I would hang a surveillance map on my wall before I'd hang another boring land-scape painting. Is that art?
Hiya Lee!

I agree with your definition of art Lee. Art really has no boundaries, it is the outmost expression of man, it has always, through time reflected the emotions, points of view, etc of human in their situation. Everytime a literary movement is described it's influences are politically involved, socially involved, etc. Lee, if your art is based on your ideals, and you share ideas with CoV, please, allow me to watch some of your art. My art is letters, I hope we can share.
