Though I’m usually in favor of shortening phrases into words, and polysyllabic words into monosyllabic words, in this case it’s not only jarring but also unnecessary: Why say “Let me know soonest” and “Do this soonest” when one can simply say “Let me know ASAP” and “Do this ASAP”? And then there’s “Do this pronto” and “Do this now.” What’s wrong with those? I’m sure there was a time, not long ago, when a lot of people argued about the efficacy of ASAP, as well. But in this case, I don’t think we’re just being cranky old codgers—the word just doesn’t work (nor does it need to since there’s already an everyday word, or acronym [some would say it’s technically an initialism, but I pronounce it ASAP, so it’s a word to me] that already performs the same duty). It’s just like our teachers used to tell us back in high school: “If it sounds gay, throw it away.”
