On the list, Hermit has no more control than anyone else other than me. On
the BBS, Hermit is a "global moderator" which allows him to delete and
modify posts, and move topics to different boards. As far as I know (correct
me if I'm wrong), he has used these powers only to reformat messages to make
them more readable, and to move topics to more appropriate boards.

There may be some groups working offlist to direct the CoV (the more the
merrier, I say), but no one has been elected.

I fully agree with this sentiment.

Hermit has two "official" roles, global moderator on the BBS and IRCop on
IRC. These were granted because Hermit has the time, knowledge and
inclination. Hermit (and only Hermit so far) has volunteered for these
positions.

On IRC he has quite a bit of power, and there are no rules in effect other
than "don't piss off the ops". It is kind of a wild west right now. I think
there should be rules and I welcome any efforts in that direction. I will do
my best to participate in the formation of the rules of conduct, and to
implement them when we agree on a set. I would particularly like to develop
the rules in a game of nomic because I see that as the optimal solution
between authoritarian and democratic extremes.

I'm very happy that you brought this up publically rather than voting with
your feet. I'm sympathetic to the former members that chose the latter
route, but unfortunately it doesn't help fix any problems we're having.

Cheers,
David
