I agree the golden rule is a nice try, but only works to the extent that people like to be treated the same. Most people seem to like to be treated the same, so it mostly works but falls short of being universal.
My idea for an ethical universal is this: Good and rational are one and the same. In other words, an action is moral if and only if it can be justified with true premises and impeccable logic.
