Gender Roles - Feminization Of Men, Or Equalizing Of Both Sexes?

Just another topic I thought could form into an interesting discussion.
Throughout human history and across all cultures, genders play a crucial role in society. I'm not talking biologically, but rather the social roles and expectations placed on each gender. Such expectations and stereotypes are distinct, often played off of the genetic differences between the two sexes, but much more extreme. Men are macho, and intellectuals. Women are passive-aggressive and more emotional. Men don't ask for directions and are always horny. Women love to shop and are sexually restraint.
Who came up with these labels. Lately, I've noticed these gender-based definitions are being blurred. Men have skin care products and carry man-purses. Women are CEOs and athletes.
Is this the result of gender roles being equalized, erased, or switched?
What are your opinions and observations of gender roles, expectations, and characteristics and the past and future evolution of them?
