Active Desktop item for the CoV?
« on: 2003-03-15 02:36:36 » |

I just made an active desktop item for my forum so that I can be notified when someone posts. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in something simular for the CoV. Here is an image of something I did real quick for my forum. Tell me what you all think:

The active desktop item is right next to my ICQ.

Hi Elven,
I like the active desktop, but I am also fascinated by the other things on your desktop. What are they?
I was wondering if we could try a few collaborative CoV knowledge management experiments:
CoV essential software list CoV essential reading mailing lists CoV essential reading lists CoV Internet favourites by topic CoV skills profile (e.g. If I need to find a Zope expert, I know I can approach Hermit, Active desktop and VB, Elven)
I have had such excellent recommendations in the past from members (e.g. Hermit introducing me to Webmin) that I would dearly love to pool knowledge and resources with people with whom I have so much in common and who are on average extremely early adopters and technically savvy.
Just a though.
Here is a partial list of software in use on my laptop, my main desktop has much more stuff on it so I will post a full list when I have chance to review it. If anyone wants any of this software, I am happy to share it with you.
Opera 7.03 browser(registered) Office XP [Outlook is primary mail client. I have Nelson E-mail organiser add in (http://www.caelo.com/) and getting things done add in both excellent] Exodus Jabber client Trillian Pro(redundant thanks to jabber transports) ACDSee 5 magnificent image management software Oxygen Phone Manager II - software for phones Nokia management Kaaza Lite - P2P app Cute FTP Pro 3 - FTP client Photoshop 6 BPM Studio - Superb MP3 mixing and recoding studio As-U-Type - On the fly spell checker ( must see this software, excellent http://www.asutype.com/ ) Boomer - Create flash presentation super easily Ad Aware 6 - Spyware finder Mailwasher Pro - anti-spam software Mindmanager 2002 - Mind map creation tools PGP 8 - Encryption software Photomeister - Image gallery creation software StartED - Excellent start up manager from http://www.outertech.com/ Cacheman - also rom http://www.outertech.com/ Total Recorder 4 - captures sound coming out of our sound card, super useful when you cannot save a stream. Abby Fine Reader - Superb OCR software Winzip 8 Macromedia Suite Easycleaner - registry and disk cleaner (http://www.toniarts.com/ecleane.htm)
I have left of my security (AV and firewall) software just in case it inspires anyone to have a go at cracking me :-)
As I mentioned this is a partial list from my laptop. I will see if there is anything else I would recommend.
I will post an expanded Windows list, plus my Linux and server lists if anyone is interested. I have extensive resources on argument analysis and critical thinking software, social network analysis, data mining, text analysis, you name it...
It is a good time to create a knowledge commons and a CoV smart mob. I also think a CoV reputation management system is in order (like Slashdot's Karma or Kuro5hin's Mojo).
What do you think?
Regards
Jonathan

I'm running a Playstation Emulator, showing off my FPS. The damn program caps at 150 FPS, otherwise I'd probably have higher. I'm sending Quake 2 .. the whole damn thing... to my bud ethan at the bottom left of the screen. To the right is the best chat program in the world, ICQ. My desktop theme is a Nine Inch Nails theme. Scatter on my desktop are a few files for YabbSE that I was using as a reference to make my active desktop.
I think making a list of recommended software would be really cool. Here are the programs I frequantly use:
Emulators: ZSNES - SNES - MS-DOS Version NESticle - NES - Windows ePSXe - PlayStation - Windows (I also have a Super Joy Box 3 hooked up to my PC so I can use my playsation controller in my PC.)
Games: War Craft 3 Wolfenstein Quake 2 Project Entropia Vampire Maquarade: Redemption Tetrinet Heros of Might & Magic 4
Chat Software: ViRC ICQ
P2P: Kazaa Lite
Web Design and Work: WS-FTP Dreamweaver 4 Ultra Dev MySqlFront
Art: Poser 4 (plus Pro pack) Adobe Photoshop 7 3D Studio Max 4 Maya 4 Bryce 5 Adobe Premiere (I use to make music-videos)
Music: Winamp
Compression: WinZip WinRar
Internet: Internet Explorer 6.0 LiveJournal Client
And, how could we ever forget the best software included with Windows: Notepad!

Some kind of directory of members favorite media (including sites, movies, books etc...), and recomended software...
Some kind of skills / accomplishments portfolio and personality infomation (such as personality type and disorders)...
I also think Virus would benefit from a to-do task system: for example a centeral wiki with tasks to be assigned and completed...
I'm interested in more (anonymous - if wanted) statistics on members, such as finding trends of personality type (to see how effective the current Virus memeset is at prorogation among different personalities), stats on personality disorders, job types, operating system, political attitudes etc...

I as well. I have been playing around with PHP a bit lately and digging into it a lot, I do not think that would be too hard to add. All we'd have to do is add a second page to the editing of your profile where you can edit/add a page for yourself that includes that information. And, you could even take it further then that with a bit more programming and make it so all users have the same type of thing on their page. Just a thought.

I think these are excellent ideas. This information need not be a privacy invasion but could help facilitate social networks analysis etc.
