White space, or negative space, is the term describing open space between design elements. White space can be between letters, words, or paragraphs of text; space in and outside of graphics, and between all of the elements of the page. White space is essential for providing spatial relationships between visual items, and serves to guide the reader's eye from one point to another.
White space can, and should, be used between paragraphs to highlight text.
It also take the form of indentation which can be used to provide structure to a document, by grouping related issue. White space may be more important than the text and images which you place on a page, in the sense that a well laid-out article can direct the reader to focus on the structure and ideas which you present, in the order in which you present them, leaving a clear image in their minds of what you wished to convey.
