In common with capitalism, democracy is one of the few systems perhaps most typically defined in terms of its negative virtues; i.e. that it is preferrable to other systems (see: OnFascism). As the novelist EM Forster put it: "two cheers for democracy, only hail the beloved leader deserves three."
