A mathematical formalism often implemented in a computer program. A CA (for short) is a network of cells. Each cell is connected to a number of neighboring cells. Each cell has a state which is determined at any given time by the previous state of itself and its neighbors.

EdwardFredkin suggested that the universe is literally a CA at the bottom, a view recently popularized by StephenWolfram in ANewKindOfScience.
