We are necessary in the sense that without us,
this would not be the same universe. So if we
want to understand reality -- instead of some
imaginary place in which we don't exist -- we
have to take ourselves into account.

Some people feel consciousness must be explained
at the quantum level. I'm not one of them, but to call
them "newage physicists" merely betrays your
ignorance -- some of them are highly respected and
respectable -- Roger Penrose, Stephen Hawking's
erstwhile collaborator, to name but one.

So how would you set about explaining
consciousness, Wade?
