Sometimes you have to act without having all the
relevant knowledge. In fact, you almost always
have to do that. I say "faith" is a shorter form of
"working hypothesis". Of course, some people
are more attached to their hypotheses than
others, and some actually cling to them despite
contra-indications -- well, in the minds of some
others, anyway. And some things can never be
tested.
There's lots of variables involved, but I reckon I'm
going to go with this one, for a while anyway, and
act quite whole-heartedly as if "faith" *does* mean
"working hypothesis". In other words, I believe it,
I have faith in it.
