It puzzles me that you think his own account particularly
reliable. The man was a notorious self-creator. Everything
he said and did (in public, anyway) was creative. Artistic
truth is not necessarily literal truth -- far from it. I'm not
saying everything he said about drugs was dishonest,
just that his later pronouncements against them may well
have been informed by early experience with them.
(Though I wouldn't put a straight lie past him either.)
