Perhaps a fad is a "social group" meme. A meme of an order different
than that of the individual/original. Perhaps it's part of the "needing
to belong" emotion/meme. I did not read _The Selfish Gene_ but
understnad (i think) the principle, and I think it has been somewhat
confirmed. Genes are quite complex little buggers, and though we have
mapped a few completely, we are only about 15% done on the human gennome
project.
