In 1815, Pvt. John Wilson, a lifelong teetotaler, was
sent by the British Army to the Bangalore garrison in
India. There, the record shows, he declined the customary
daily ration of rum. That infuriated his commander. A
court-martial convicted him of "an act of rebellion." He
was shot.
